Southern Pines GC--New Tees
« on: August 08, 2013, 11:30:10 AM »
SPGC just posted that they've opened a new set of tees known as the "Black Course".  From their Facebook post:

"The "Black Tee" on the 4th is located on the #16th...adding 45 yards. The 7th and 8th both have NEW tee boxes adding 40 yards on the 7th and 35 yards on the 8th. BUT, on the 8th, the driving angle has changed but not the routing. The fairway bunker is in play now thus "shrinking" the landing zone...by about 1/2 unless you carry the tee shot 265 (over the bunker)."

Cool stuff.  I'm a little thrown by lengthening #7--the other par 3s out there were already pretty stout (191, 187, and 172), especially in context of the overall length (was 6268 now 6388?).  Two other notes:  1) they are requiring everyone who plays the blacks carry a 7 index, 2) #2 is now a par 4.  I'm a little thrown by this--is 6388 par 70 REALLY only appropriate for 7 indexes?  Oh, and they continue to forbid walking on the weekend for non-members before noon, I believe.  THAT is ridiculous for a course that BEGS to be walked.

SP did not impress me nearly as much as the course across the street.

NEVER MIND...too much rice pudding...thinking of Pine Needles.
