Golf Courses you've played the most
« on: August 04, 2013, 11:31:59 AM »
Sven started a thread awhile ago focusing on the last 10 courses you've played.  The idea of that thread was to see what courses the members of GCA are playing and to give some context regarding experiences of our member's posts.

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,49159.0.html

I was thinking to add to Sven's idea and add further context to our member's contributions regarding their commentary, we could also have a list of what are the golf courses each of us have played the most.  This one won't be as actively updated as the other one, but should provided some great background.

I'll start in the order of most played down to my fifth most played course.

Rivermont (Johns Creek, GA)
St. Ives (Johns Creek, GA)
East Lake (Atlanta, GA)
Dismal River White--Nicklaus (Mullen, NE)
The Golf Club (New Albany, OH)
Sportsman/Adventure loving golfer.

Myopia Hunt Club...35...worked there in 2004.
Essex County Club...30 +/-...played many tournaments here.
Neshobe GC...25 +/-....next closest course to Middlebury.
Taconic...22...lots of college tournaments against Williams.
President's GC south of Boston...20 +/-...host of Norfolk Co. Classic.
Indian Ridge GC in Andover, MA...worked there summer 2002...maybe 15 rounds.

I have never counted rounds played at courses, so I don't know the order of these for sure, but the courses I've played most would be:

Sterling Farms, where I grew up
Crystal Downs, where I've been a member since 1988
High Pointe, which isn't gaining ground anymore
Pacific Dunes

Those are probably the only courses I've played more than 25 times.  I just don't stay in one place very much.

The list of courses I've played 10-15 times is ridiculous -- it's a good slice of the top 50 courses in the world, plus about a dozen of my own courses.  [North Berwick is probably in my top ten, and so is The National Golf Links.]  I'm blessed to have been able to go back to those places as often as I have, but I'm careful not to over-extend my welcome.

I have worked at a lot of golf courses, so I have 20+ rounds at many courses.

The top 5 would probably be though

Stone Eagle Golf Club (well over 100 times)
Brookshire Golf Club (my home course I grew up on in Carmel, IN)
Tumble Creek Golf Club
Rancho Santa Fe Farms Golf Club
Adams Mountain Country Club

The sad thing now that I am in the turf industry, I am lucky to play twice a month.  I miss playing all the time.

In no particular order;

Silloth-on-Solway
Moray Old
Glasgow Gailes
Gullane No 3
Bothwell Castle

Gullane is the only one I've never been a member of but due to their winter rates not to mention the competition for visitors that they have throughout the winter months, I must have played it easily 50 plus times over the years. Bothwell Castle is the course I grew up on, a parkland track on clay soil, that none the less used to play hard and fast due to lack of irrigation and long hot summers (those were the days  :'()

Mac--Nice idea for a thread, and much more refreshing than all the attention-seeking type course listings...Got me out of GCA posting "semi-retirement" ;)

From Most to fifth-most:

1)  Pumpkin Ridge--Witch Hollow
2)  West Seattle Golf Course
3)  Chambers Bay
4)  Pumpkin Ridge--Ghost Creek
5)  Pacific Dunes

and to round out the (mostly) municipal 6-pack!
6)  tie--Bellevue (WA) Municipal Golf Course and Washoe County Municipal Golf Course (Reno, NV)

Charwood Golf Club (West Columbia, SC) 1,000-1,200 rounds 1994-2003
University Club/Cobblestone Park (Blythewood, SC) 250 rounds 2003-2005
Columbia Country Club (Blyethewood, SC) 1,000 rounds 2005-Present

There are no other courses I've played as many as 30 times and only a handful of those are even double-digits. In about 20 years of playing golf I've probably played a total of just over 2,500 rounds.

My home club since I joined and restarted playing golf about 18 years ago, Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte.  Beyond that, I have absolutely no idea, but probably Lakeview Country Club (& Resort, today) in Morgantown, WV, where I played age 12 - 15.

Over the past 10 years, I have had the good fortune to have played Royal Dornoch well over 200 times and Golspie 150-200 times. From 1983 to 1999, I played the Presidio GC in San Francisco roughly 500 times.

There are no other courses I've played as many as 30 times and only a handful of those are even double-digits. In about 20 years of playing golf I've probably played a total of just over 2,500 rounds.

Over 120 rounds a year is a pretty good average...one I hope to attain for my avg annual play.

As Chip said for those that move a fair amount the number of courses will be larger.  Since my dad is military and I'm military a new home course comes every few years...that also means the courses are typically public or military courses as an initiation fee every few years isn't in the cards.

York Golf and Tennis Club, York ME - The course is attributed to Donald Ross.  It's the place where I really started to play golf and looking back the course has shaped what I enjoy in a course.  It opens with a par 3, second has a tee shot to a blind landing area, third has a blind approach up over a hill...the course has quirk.

Del Monte Golf Course - A pretty basic course owned by Pebble Beach Co.  It allowed junior golfers to play free 1 hour after twilight.  This is probably where my preference of playing in the evening started.

Bayonet and Blackhorse - Worked at these two courses allegedly designed by Gen McClure and played every day before or after work.  I worked at the course right as there was talks of selling and renovating the courses.

Eisenhower Golf Club (Blue and Silver) - The Blue Course is a RTJ course and the Silver course is Frank Hummel.  I think I payed under $200 a year and my last two years I figure I the cost averaged less than a dollar a round.  I probably played the silver course more often.  The silver is the shorter, quirkier and less crowded course.  I really enjoyed both courses.

The Courses Andrews Air Force Base (East, West, South) - The club is probably the most exclusive club I've belonged to with a number of regular high power players as members.  I rarely played the South course (where the president plays) because a cart was required.  Condoleezza Rice used to play the first 9 holes on the East course Sunday at around noon.  As far as military courses they are better than most but I don't think people on this site would be impressed (although value is pretty good).

Rustic Canyon - Rustic has been discussed recently here and is what brought me to this site.

Rancho Park - Close to where I lived.  The course has good bones and some significant history as the site of multiple LA Opens.

The new home course is The Eglin AFB Golf Courses (Eagle and Falcon) - They are in the discussion for the best US military golf course and have a bit of history that may point to Langford and Moreau as the original architect (the course is not as originally routed but uses some of the original holes on the Eagle Course).

Interestingly enough I've been a social member at Pinehurst for over a year but have yet to play a round on #2 but plan to add the courses there to this list in the future.
