Donald Ross and the Art of Golf Architecture Restoration: A Celebration at Pinehurst
Nov. 10-12, 2013 • Pinehurst Resort, North Carolina

A century after he began to transform the American sports landscape, Donald Ross continues to hold a defining place in the history of golf course design. In this intensive and enjoyable three-day engagement at the famed Pinehurst Resort, Golfweek magazine is coordinating a program that will help attendees appreciate the art and craft of Ross’ work. We’ll also be showing people how to enhance and recapture that magic in their own home courses.

Our program includes architects, historians, turf experts, financial consultants, golf pros, green chairmen and superintendents – all of them with extensive first-hand experience in bringing back to life their Ross courses. Learn from the experts, and also enjoy golf at Ross’ most famous and most recently restored gem, Pinehurst No. 2, home to the 2014 U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open.

Program includes a discussion among Tom Doak, Tom Fazio and Rees Jones. Also, presentations/talks by Brad Klein and Ran Morrissett as well as Minikahda superintendent Jeff Johnson, business consultant Larry Hirsch and Pinehurst superintendent Bob Farren.

Architecture junkies welcome, along with green chairmen, general managers, golf pros.

Thanks for bringing back the great memories I had at Manakiki Golf Club in Cleveland. I'm sure Minikahda is nice as well.

How come Ron Prichard is listed as a guest speaker, but does not appear in the schedule?

This sounds like a great event...

For fans of hickory golf, the Mid Pines Hickory Open is held that weekend as well - starting on Friday with foursomes and concluding on Sunday...

GJB, Prichard might have been listed on an older link; he's not on it now. In any case, elements of the program had evolved until the time when we could go public with it.

Also 11/10 is the Mullock's auction in Pinehurst of GCA and Kingsley Club legend Ralph Livingston III's Tom Stewart golf club collection...Sounds like it's shaping up to be quite a weekend...

Golf is a game. We play it. Somewhere along the way we took the fun out of it and charged a premium to be punished.- - Ron Sirak

Sounds like a nice event and chance to see Pinehurst again. I am a "likely".

GJB,

fair is fair, you are correct. I was surprised to see the old registration form unchanged. The slap upside the head is deserved.

Is it just me that finds Rees on the program odd?  Considering C&C renovated the work he did at Pinehurst its unusual.

In all fairness, sometimes we don't know the instructions given to architects and Rees may have been following instructions perfectly.  I for one would like to know his comments on C&C work at Pinehurst.

Didn't Rees restore the greens prior to the Coore and Crenshaw changes to the rest of the course?

The point of having Rees Jones, Tom Fazio and Tom Doak together is not to endorse anyone but to open up a discussion. In organizing a conference you are sometimes subject to the scheduling fates of people you'd also like to include on the program. That was also the case here, but we are thrilled with the people who have kindly agreed to have a frank discussion.

Brad,

Thanks for that, the harping about Rees Jones seems like piling on.

I'm not harping just making a point.  I'll say this as nice a possible, C&C work at Pinehurst basically renovated all the work he did there less than 20 years ago.

His work at The Country Club was dramatically fixed by Gil Hanse.

His work at Quaker Ridge dramatically fixed by Gil.

His work at Bobs own course, MPCC is about to be altered by Tom Fazio.

His renovation work at Cog Hill is universally disliked.

His work at AAC was verbally criticized by Phil Mickelson and others.

His work at Congressional, Torrey Pines and Medinah is questioned by many.

If I'm going to have a summit on the economy I'm not inviting Jimmy Carter.  If there is a meeting on corporate governance, I'm not asking Jeffrey Skillingto speak.
