Cheshire and midlands golf

Am traveling at the minute and after some help from the DG for recommendations for golf in the Cheshire region.

Willing to travel up to an hour or so. I've been through Sean's posts and think the drive to Cavendish is option one.

Also we are going to have a hit on the drive down from Manchester to London. 

Recommendations would be great. Am traveling with my father / has been his first time to Scotland and have been showing him the sights. Scotland is beautifully dry although the height of tourist season means some un-Scottish  pace of play issues.

Michael,

I'd recommend these three -
either, 1st choice,
Beau Desert just north of Birmingham and only 10 minutes from the M6 motorway, near Cannock
or, second choice,
Whittington Heath, probably less than 10 mins from the M6-Toll again just north of Birmingham, near Litchfield
or, third choice,
Tadmarton Heath, 10 minutes off the M40 motorway south of Birmingham, near Banbury, north of Oxford.

All three are heathland courses, sandy soil, heather, gorse, pine. None will disappoint you I'm sure.

Beau Desert is pure class, top notch. The other two are also very well worth playing if you can't get a game at The Beau, WHGC being the longer in yardage, THGC being olde worlde, very tight with lots of gorse lining many fairways.

Reddish Vale in Stockport looks like a really interesting Mackenzie track.

I would put Beau and Whittington ever so slightly above Tadmarton, but all are good.

What about Little Aston?

Delamere Forest is a terrific Fowler course in Cheshire, just south of Manchester and very highly recommended.

Mark Rowlinson has published an "In My Opinion" piece titled "The Golf Courses of Cheshire" which has reviews of all the many courses in Chester.  Lots of interesting courses in that part of England.

If you have time, you won't be far from Hoylake.  A day split between Royal Liverpool and Wallasey would be well spent!

Not sure if this is near where you'll be ... my cousin hosted me at Enville Golf Club when I visited in March. Two courses - Lodge and Highland. Lodge was fun, Highland was more fun and more challenging. Good mix of short and long holes. Really enjoyed the par 5s and a few of the short par 4s make you think.

Highland hosts Open Championship qualifying.

Thank you everyone for the recommendations.

My traveling companions are arranged to play a course closer to London on Monday - I have chosen for a break from golf to visit friends instead!!

I am going to try to play Cavendish late tomorrow evening - if anyone would like to join me please PM me!

Thanks again - this is, indeed, a beautiful part of england and strolling through Chester today was particularly impressive.

Did you walk the wall?   It's pretty narrow in places, and obviously designed before gunpowder!  (Contrast with the wall around Lucca, Italy!)

Michael,

Sorry not to see this in time to respond usefully. I hope you didn't get caught in any thunder. My wife, elder son and I went to play golf this afternoon at Wilmslow. Wife and I played two shots and Edward one shot when the thunder began, rather too close for comfort. We came in speedily as the storm grew rapidly.

The other must plays in the Cheshire region are Reddish Vale, Delamere Forest, Sandiway, Prestbury and in the midlands Beau, Whittington, Little Aston. Also consider using the M1 to travel south which brings Notts, Sherwood Forest and Coxmoor into the reckoning. If you are considering Tadmarton Heath (which I enjoy) don't forget Huntercombe which is a great experience.
