Can't help but wonder if he's got his eye on the Stillwater golf course that was 90% constructed on Tanya Tucker's farm in  Arrington:

Based upon the aerial, I'm astonished this course never opened.

It's just a few miles from Norman's "The Grove" which has now opened after going to seed in the recession.

I wish Gary the best, but I can't fathom the economics being sensible, though Williamson County is quite affluent.

Bogey,

Have you played The Grove?  I never knew it had gone to seed; I contacted them about trying to play and was declined.  Haven't seen you or Tim talk about it.

Per the article, would you say that Gaylord Springs has the market covered for links style golf?

I've played Gary's course at Hermitage, and I liked it.  I enjoy both of them.  Never heard of Forrest Crossings though.

RJ, that's Harpeth Hills, a muni surrounded by the largest city park in the nation, primarily forest.  Just south of Belle Meade, Nashville's highest rent district.  Nice course over rolling hills with a very good par four contiguous to the steeplechase track.

Dale, good to hear from you.  Forrest Crossing (named for the spot where Nathan Bedford Forrest crossed the Harpeth River during the Battle of Franklin (where We were trounced) is in Franklin - no great shakes.

To call Gaylord's course a links is a stretch, though its generally treeless with undulations generally limited to containment mounding.  Definitely worth playing however given some solid work there by our boy Jeff Brauer.  Pretty nifty routing on a narrow site along the Cumberland River.

Surprisingly, the best example of links architecture in the area is the three hole stretch - 7 through 9 at Vanderbilt Legends Club's South Course.  More like Cruden Bay than Muirfield one might say.  Hopefully Tim Bert will weigh in.

The Grove is interesting.  Not much buzz at all.  I have a good contact that I suggested an inquiring rater call but he was told that the course was not yet "ready" for raters, notwithstanding the fact that it had been open nine months.

This had been today's Nashvegas update.

Bogey,

Thanks for the update.

I wasn't really trying to slight the course at Opryland (once Opryland, always Opryland); I think there are some good holes out there.  I really like the par 3 perched up on the hill (3,4??), and I think some of the holes running along the perimeter of the property are nice. I usually get down there once a year and catch the twilight rate.

How is Westhaven doing?

Westhaven is gaining traction as the new urbanistic residential development continues to thrive.  Decent work by Art Hill's group, but I can't help but wonder what could have been had Hanse been retained as originally announced.  I recently moved to downtown Franklin and would have loved the chance to play a Hanse course on a regular basis.

I played The Grove a month or so ago.  A healthy wind and fast turf, even though still growing in.  I'd love to go back in another year & see it again.

The Tennessean restricts my views of articles now.  Would anyone mind to summarize the original article mentioned at top?  Thank you.

Nick,

The article says that Gary Baird is wanting to build a links style course in Williamson County somewhere along the Harpeth River.  He apparently has some sketches, but looking for investors.  He realizes it will be impossible to build a true links in TN, but would go for that look.  He would have enourmous greens w/ridiculous undulation.

So little is ever said here of Tennessee public golf courses, that I am moved to 'add-in', perhaps inappropriately, on this rare thread.

Over in Dickson TN is a golf course with, IMHO, an very good design. The Tennessean, by Keith Foster, could have been a sensational course with the right owner and a little work. One of the sweetest designs I have ever played, but the conditions have been consistently atrocious.

I just wonder if anyone on the site has seen it. I know many have seen "The Harvester', which I would only rate better because of conditions. If anyone is in TN and looking for some hidden gem, enjoy this.

Doug,
I'm very familiar with the Tennessean; its about 30 minutes from my house. It is a Keith foster design, but it's not in Dickson. It is just outside of the small town of Paris.  Dickson is just west of Nashville, probably 1 1/2 hours away.

Your right about course though. When it opened it was an eye-opener for this area. High level of difficulty and very visually intimidating. But as a housing development that never panned out they have struggled.

New ownership came in a few years ago and made improvements. Clubhouse was built and conditioning improved for a while. I was there about 3 weeks ago and it is slipping again though.  I worry money issues are back. I only saw 4 others on the course when I was down there.

If you are in the area again, let me know. We have quite a few very affordable courses down here in West KY. I bet you would enjoy some of them.

You are right Dale [see my message]. I was thinking of Dickson because I also like Greystone there, but for layout I think The Tennessean [in Paris TN, of course] is best public around. Wish it was more accessible, someone would certainly have kept it up.

Dale, how close are you to the Kentucky Dam State course? I really enjoyed that one when I played it. Mineral Mound has a few good holes too.
