A little good news from Southampton
« on: July 27, 2013, 09:38:15 PM »
The owners of more than 400 acres in East Quogue are now looking to build a golf course and 82-lot residential development on their land, if they can secure a change of zone from the Southampton Town Board to allow their project, after attempts to preserve the property fell through.

I picked up the Southampton Press today and sure it will probably take 5 years to get the permitting, but it is nice to see a positive outlook in the world of golf.....

Mike,

That determination might have a significant impact on the architects available for the project

I have no idea what the land looks like but my guess is there is no shortage of architects willing to work on a project in the Hamptons, public or private.

My guess is that a bigger limitation would be architects who feel a certain sense of loyalty to the clients they've worked with on Long Island such that they wouldn't want to build something newer and potentially better down the street.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I heard about this when I was out at Sebonack for the Women's Open.  The rumor was that it was Discovery Land Co. that was looking to get permitting for the project, for a property where David Kidd had routed a course a few years back.

However, the two people who mentioned it both said that it would never happen, because the property is in the pine barrens and any development there is strictly limited.  Hard to imagine that Discovery would pursue something that's impossible, but if you haven't spent much time in the Hamptons, you can only imagine the politics of new development.

JC,

It would depend upon the "use"

If Private, I doubt C&C would be interested, if Public, I think they would be interested.

Tom Doak,

The Pine Barrens Commission is akin to the CCC and as you indicated, it's doubtful that any golf course would be built on land under their jurisdiction.

Interesting.  Why do you say that?  Why would that be true?

Because Bill Coore told me that that's their policy, and I took him as the kind of individual who was true to his word.
That they won't design a course for similar use in a given area, but, would design courses with disimilar uses in a given area.

In essence, they didn't want their courses competing with one another.
