Tee off over the preceeding green..
« on: July 19, 2013, 08:16:41 PM »
I had the opportunity to host a true golf legend (phila pga hall of fame) last week at my club, Trenton Country Club.  After hitting our tee balls on #16 (which goes directly over #15 green), I remarked that it might be the only hole in the area like it.  Furthermore, it has always been this way, 1914, as they ran out of room when tye expanded to 18 holes.

He said it may be the ony hole in the country or world for that matter.

My question is, do you know of any hole like this?  Where you tee off literally over the green, and not from an elevated manufactured tee.  Right over it.  If you are the group behind and went on the green, you'd get hit.

I linked to the hole from the esteemed Bausch Collection for reference.

Bel Air CC in Los Angeles, built a back tee on #9 a few years ago that has you hit over the 8th green.
Still need to play Pine Valley!!

The tee shot on the fourth at Pennard in Wales goes right over the third green.

I think this only works on private courses!

2 tee at Royal Melbourne East.  Hit it right over the first and peel it.

Thanks Jonathon.  Our #16 is just like that..right over #15 then a peel right.  Our architect (our third head pro), was from Scotland, down the road from Prestwick and Troon.  I'm wondering if its like this because of the lack of real estate and that this is all he knew.

The back tee at Sand Hills on #5 has you hitting over #4 green.   Though elevated a little from the level of the green it is definitely not manufactured.

There's one at Nairn.  But that's because the ocean took their original tee.  When I played it, the flagstick was actually in the way of a tee shot.

Isn't one of the holes on Dismal Doak like that? it can be done at Wolf Point also. Obviously it's just not feasible on most golf courses.

The back box on #13 at Ballyneal goes right over the #12 green. There's also a few informal teeing grounds that members have created over the previous greens... #5 and #14 come to mind first.

I recall that the 1st tee at Narin & Portnoo (on the west coast of Ireland) tees off over the 18th green. I was there in 1994 and don't know if it is still the case.

The par 4 9th hole at Hilversum in Holland plays over the 8th green.
Different - but the lower opening tee at Porthcawl plays right over the 18th green

Doesn't 18 at Lahinch go over at least one green?

Pretty common on older UK courses. 17th at Addington an obvious example. The first at Roal Porthcawl isn't quite over the green, but it crosses the approach.

At the Euro Senior Tour event at Porthcawl we played off the low tee that hits right across the 18th green. I assume the higher tee on the other side of the clubhouse is the main tee??

Back tee on #6 Prairie Club Dunes, not sure if it is used much as there are lots of extra tees on that course.

I don't think they use the tee closest to the ocean very often.  Too bad, the angle is more interesting.  I love that opening trio of four pars at Porthcawl.

Steve,

Unless its down wind, that's a pretty risky line.

This is pretty common in the UK.  Heck, Royal Worlington & Newmarket does it at least three times in nine holes ... you tee off over #2 green for the third, over #4 green for the fifth, and over #5 green for the sixth.

It works best if the previous hole is a par-3 ... presumably, then, the players in the group behind are still hitting off the tee while you are hitting over the green.  It wouldn't work as well if the group behind was all 75 yards out when you walked off the green, but, I'd guess it would still work just fine in the UK, because the golfers are all more aware and more courteous than here.

I've done it a handful of times [usually just for back tees], at Stone Eagle and Ballyneal and Dismal.  Stonewall (New) has one, too.

Agreed, thats a huge carry and the apple orchard is not a friendly place if you dont pull the shot off.

Also, Stonewall's new course has an optional tee on the 15th hole that hits over the front of the 14th green if I'm remembering correctly.

Tom-that is exactly how our course is setup, par 3 before the next hole that tee's off over the preceeeding green.

What's more, the par 3 is a short hole so there's no real danger of injuring anyone.  We are now working on enforcing alternate shots on these two tees to keep the pace of place going.

Image from the legendary Joe Bausch collection below..next tee box is to the right of the green.
