I thought it was special for two reasons: 1) the dynamic nature of the high-quality leaderboard; and 2) each contender was battling his own distinctive demons and history more baldly than usual.
As for #1, I'd love to see the graph of the leaders' positions at 10-minute intervals throughout the day. Momentum shifted constantly.
As for #2, for each of the top players, the challenge of his round seemed to match the major challenge(s) of his career.
Could Tiger overcome his losing streak in majors AND finally win a major from behind?
Could Westwood finally putt well when it counted?
Could Phil show the discipline that he's lacked most of his career? (With par or 1-under likely good enough to win, careless bogies would be fatal.)
Could Adam Scott navigate the back nine of the Open without choking?
Could Stenson find finesse to match his power and consistency?
Could Mahan win on a course that's not PGA-soft?
Could Cabrera slash and pound his way into the Hall of Fame?
All this sounds Nantzy, but for once the reality exceeded the hype.
