Another bloody Australian

Good morning/afternoon/evening all,

It seems from what I've observed that the done thing is to announce one's arrival to this august group.

So, hello from another Australian in GCA land.

A bit about myself:

I grew up in Adelaide.

First smacked a ball around a public course called the Patawalonga.

Joined and spent my formative golfing years at the palindromic Glenelg Golf Club.

Was lucky enough to join a certain Royal club in Adelaide, and am a member to this day.

Moved to Melbourne, and joined a great sand belt club in the metropolitan area - I believe one of the finest members' clubs there is.

Over the last few years I've been fortunate to travel to the UK several times to begin to understand and appreciate links golf.

I've had my first trip to the US to play a few of the great tracks.

And I've lots more to come.

I've greatly enjoyed your views and opinions since being introduced to this site six months or so ago, and hope I have something to add.

A couple of questions;

Do you know any of the other aussies on here ?

Favoutire course and why ?

How many years in prison should Horwill have got for his outragious stamp on Jones ?

I know Mike Clayton as he's a member of my club.

I don't know if Neil Crafter remembers me, but he once kicked my arse sideways around Kooyonga.

I'm sure for the other Aussies it's one degree of separation.

Favourite course?

I was fortunate to play Pine Valley four times over three days last year.

Endless variety and inspiration.

I thought that was as good as it gets.

But then I thought back to Royal County Down, which I'd played a year earlier.

Breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

I've played so many great courses, it doesn't seem right to have a favourite.

It's a privilege to have played them all.

Brave timing for an Aussie to announce himself on any international forum 6 days before the start of an Ashes series.  Welcome.

In addition to Niall's question about Horwill (and the chair is an option Niall forgot), do you think Australia would fare better in the Ashes if Darren Lehmann had been asked to play, rather than just coach?

Another Aussie with a first name Andrew! Welcome to the group. What a great experience to play Pine Valley 4 times in 3 days, I have been luck enough to play a lot of good courses but there aren't many that I have actually played twice or more.

Niall and Mark P - not a rugby follower I'm afraid, so that stuff's lost on me.

On cricket - I actually played a bit with Lehmann when I was young, so I've seen the genius first hand.

I could bore you senseless with talk of how he should have played 100 test matches etc...

Michael - would love to get down to NZ sometime soon, although I have another Scotland trip coming in September.

Good to see you on here. There seems to be way to much recent conversation at Metropolitan around green speed and firmness. They are related but separate issues. This morning - in the middle of winter - the greens were 13.6 yet still some persist with the (to me) ridiculous argument that the greens are 'too slow'

What do you make of it all?

Welcome, back to Mark's comment. I'd have to agree with him. The first person I ever met that had played Pine Valley was an Aussie woman who was a member of the Australian.

I've had the honor of playing most of the great courses down under. You don't have any right to complain.

...and Pine Valley, well just played that one once. On Wednesday, great experience but makes me feel like I need to go back to golf lessons and start over. Glad I didn't have to play it multiple times just yet.

Sounds like you are missing NL in your resume so on your next trip over to Europe...

Regarding the "Horwill Affair", I watched last week's Test from Melbourne in my local here in Bangkok. This is a very good pub patronised by hundreds of Brit ex-pats. After the decision during the past week from the Canadian Review Officer, I'm now going to another pub to watch the decider this afternoon (Bangkok time). I do want to enjoy the game and not have my ear chewed off by three hundred angry Brit ex-pats.

Yes I did and it just dawned on me that she was actually Scottish, so a Scottish lady who lives in Sydney and is a member of The Australian. There can't be too many. She's like a 2 hcp, I'd say 50ish. She told me the whole story but I can't remember her name anymore it was about 6 years ago that I was there. Her boyfriend had been a pro and he arranged it. Really nice lady and a solid golfer. I was thinking she was an Aussie.

I've heard a few comments about the greens, but I tend to ignore all that.

Surely if they're true that's the main thing?

We're very fortunate to play on brilliant surfaces all year round - plenty of our North American and European friends would think we were crazy complaining about greens like Metro's in the middle of winter.

Mike - ladies are apparently welcome at PV on Sunday afternoons.

Andrew - welcome, always enjoy hosting Metro members at Deal, I've been graciously hosted there a couple of times so its a pleasure to return the compliment. Apart from Valderama and a few pretty private US clubs, your fairways are the finest I've played especially for a "well played" members course.
