A. V. Macan's Salem Golf Club (all eighteen posted) New
« on: July 07, 2013, 01:24:55 AM »
Salem Golf Club is the work of A. Vernon Macan, as reported in The Oregon Sunday Journal, 1/29/28, and The Oregon Statesman, 5/15/28, 8/16/28, and 10/28/28.

One of Macan's principles was to not penalize bold play on the approach. This is exhibited by his refusal to place bunkers deeper than the center of the green, as he did not want to penalize the player that went over the green, but would rather penalize the timid player playing short. The bunker placement in the routing shown below demonstrates this principle.

Unfortunately Salem Golf Club is on a relatively small piece of property. This limited routing options, and prevented Macan from some of his ideals. He preferred to have holes change directions with each successive hole. Holes laid out in triangles allowed for this. One of his ideal routings would be a triangle near the club house allowing return in three holes, and a pair of triangles back to back that would allow return to the club house after six holes. The routing shown below shows he was able to make a change in direction form one to two, from three to four, from six to seven to eight to nine, and from ten to eleven to twelve to thirteen. Other turns in direction went back in the direction that previous hole came from, which is something he wished to avoid, but the size of the property limited him.

SalemGolfClubRouting by Garland Bayley, on Flickr

Another of his principles specified an ideal configuration of hole lengths. Specifically, ideally he wanted six holes at or just beyond the limit of players to reach in two shots. Five holes that he called drive and iron holes, three holes that he called drive and pitch holes, and four one shot holes. The total length would reach 6200 to 6400 yards.

Salem Golf Club adheres to this principle fairly closely with one less hole on the border of reachability and one more one shotter, but still falling in the total length range at 6236 yards. When he began his career he limited the long holes at 475 yards, but as equipment and players improved he upped that limit to 525 yards.

1 471 Par 5 border of reachability

SalemGolfClub01 by Garland Bayley, on Flickr

Macan wanted to allow the lesser golfers to have fun, but challenge the better players. His placement of bunkers on the first hole shows how he placed them beyond what could be reached by the average golfer.

The tee shot shows a common affliction in the Pacific Northwest, trees that have grown up to restrict play or that have been added to “beautify” the course. Macan, like MacKenzie specified that trees should be planted in clumps allowing openings between clumps for daring and spectacular recovery shots.

SalemGolfClub001 by Garland Bayley, on Flickr

Second shot for the average golfer that cannot reach the “traps.” Macan made a complete switch from always calling them bunkers in Ireland where he learned the game and always calling them traps after his move across the pond thereby adopting the common name used in the west.

The bunkers on hole #1 look like they are flush with the fairway.  How deep are they and are they at all difficult to get out of?

They are shallow and not difficult to get out of. This can be expected from a modest club like Salem. I can not tell you what they were like when the course was just finished. But, perhaps an old timer like Mucci who has been everywhere can. ;D

Wow, Salem looks like (too) many courses in the Pacific Northwest... I think it has something to do with all of the awful trees planted over the years, which have constricted these layouts, horribly ;D

The tee shot on two shows you crossing cart paths where #2 and #8 cross. The course boundary is on the left of the hole with dense forest running down that side.

SalemGolfClub005 by Garland Bayley, on Flickr

Bunker on the right shows that Macan prefers you need to play near the course boundary to get the preferred approach.

SalemGolfClub006 by Garland Bayley, on Flickr

Green slope from right down to left reinforces the need to play near the boundary to get the preferred approach. The unfortunate thing is that the trees have probably exploded in size and number making the preferred play harder than intended.

I played Waverly last week in Portland.  Gil Hanse did a lot of terrific restoration (to a 1930's style) according to my companions, as this was my first visit.    The number one thing he did was recommend the removal of a lot of trees, and the result was a course in the Pacific NW with plenty of room to hit the ball.  Only one hole was rather claustrophobic, the tree lined par 5 fifth.   No where else did the course feel cramped.  I would like to play Salem after the clearing is complete and the lumber hauled off!

Thanks Bill. We can use all the advocation for tree removal in the PNW that we can get. :)

Bill,
I didn't feel any claustrophobia after my drive ended up on the 4th hole.

As Garland says, Salem is on a very restricted acreage. Many of the trees become safety features for errant shots from other fairways and directions. Salem GC hosts the OGA's Parent-Child tournament for the umpty umph time this coming weekend. Course record is 58 by former PGA player Pat Fitzsimons

Garland, if they're available online, do you have links to the articles you reference?  I've always seen Salem Golf Club credited to Ercel Kay, never to Macan, so I'd enjoy seeing the articles.  Macan did design the original Illahee Hills CC course (NLE - just to the S/SW of the existing Illahe Hills CC course) which was a couple miles down River Rd from Salem Golf Club.

No, I don't have links to the articles. Michael Riste found the articles and referenced them in his Biography of Macan. Here's a quote from one that may explain the confusion. "Vernon Macan, who ranks alongside Chandler Egan as the leading golf course designer on the coast, laid out the new course here. He recently stated to Mr. Kay, owner, that he has never seen a tract of land that combined all the desirable features for a golf course as this one."

I think Macan gets shorted in credit for some of his work, because he treated golf architecture like architects do for buildings. He makes the plans and then someone else does the construction. He was on site some to make sure the builders understood and carried out the plans, but he did not do the building. So perhaps Mr. Kay, the owner, took charge of the construction, and thereby gets credit erroneously.

Obviously the Google Earth shot was from a bad angle, or there would not be playable hole here. Apparently a tee has been added to the right that I did not notice while playing from the left tee, but shows up on the Google Earth view.

The picture from the tee is actually taken from the cart path to the right of the tee to give a better view of the green.

SalemGolfClub008 by Garland Bayley, on Flickr

This is taken from the right side of the green after we both chipped on from there. The green slopes down from here so it seems quite apparent that Macan's intention for the hole is gone. The proper play to this green would be to cut a shot from the tee into the side slope of the green by starting the ball towards the course boundary on the left. With the plethora of trees present, that shot is gone.

The area on the right in the satellite view is a fruit tree orchard. It is currently being renovated with a local rule to take a free drop away from any of the fruit trees. As can be seen in the picture below, this is a straight away two shot hole.

SalemGolfClub010 by Garland Bayley, on Flickr

The approach is over a water feature to a shallow punch bowl green. Macan seldom used greens that slope from back down to front, with his rule being only if the land indicated it. In this case, the land so indicated so this is the most receptive green on the course.

If you look carefully, you can find my ball nestled in what looked like a bobcat track. (Not far from the green we found remains of a stellar jay. Don't know if that's related, bobcats prefer rabbits). Steep face of the bunker makes taking a stance difficult and making a shot near impossible.  Got the ball to hit the lip and fall back to the floor of the bunker from where I was able to extract it.

This was somewhat commonplace when a prominent member rather than the architect was the one actually constructing the course, as opposed to planning it.  And it is easy to see how it could happen the membership sees that one prominent member in charge of what appears to be the entire creation process.

Garland, is this claustrophobic tree-shroud common on these courses?  Hole after hole the trees encroach on the line of play.  On other Macan courses you've described more Macan strategy.  Is that present here?
The trouble with modern equipment and distance—and I don't see anyone pointing this out—is that it robs from the player's experience. - Mickey Wright

David,

This is the worst I've seen on a Macan. As Pete noted, they may feel they need the trees for safety as it is on a small property. As I noted early on, the trees are preventing the strategic approach that Macan envisioned.
