Master's Invitations
« on: June 24, 2013, 03:44:10 PM »

Not wishing to highjack the Stranahan thread, but can anyone tell me which amateur received the most invitations to the Masters?

My guess would be Charlie Coe. 19 appearances I think. Yates maybe second?

According to Links Magazine, Charlie Coe and Richard Chapman each had 19 Masters appearances as amateurs.

Years ago, quarter finalists in the US Amateur received automatic invitations

Patrick,

In addition to the quarterfinalists at the US Am, didn't the entire Walker Cup teams on both sides of the Atlantic receive invites?  I do some work with a member of the Carr family and I think their Dad played in muliple Masters by way of being on the GB&I Walker Cup team.

Michael,

I'm not sure, remember the Walker Cup isn't held every year, so I don't know how that would affect invitations.

That would also take up alot of slots if both teams were invited

Walker cup teams and alternates believe it or not. Billy Joe Patton's famous run in the 54 Masters was only possible because he was invited as a Walker Cup alternate.

Vinny Giles had a few.  6 or 7 or more?

I thought it was Bill Campbell from West Virginia?

In his amateur golfing career, Campbell played in 37 U.S. Amateurs, including 33 consecutively from 1941–77, and won the event in 1964. He played on eight Walker Cup teams from 1951 to 1975, captaining the 1955 team, and finished with an overall record of 11-4-3 (7-0-1 in singles matches). He was runner-up in the 1954 British Amateur. He was three times runner-up in the Canadian Amateur Championship, in 1952, 1954, and 1965. He won three West Virginia Opens, four North and South Amateurs, and fifteen West Virginia Amateur titles. He won the U.S. Senior Amateur in 1979 and 1980 (medalist in 1979, 1980, and 1984), and finished 2nd overall in the 1980 U.S. Senior Open.

Joel-According to this article, Campbell "qualified" for the Masters 18 times. I assume that means he received an invitation. I believe he did not play one year because he was running for office and the primary conflicted with the Masters.

According to the 2009 Masters Media Guide (the most recent one I have), Dick Chapman and Charlie Coe each made 19 Masters appearances; Bill Campbell 18.  Not sure who received the most "invitations".  Frank Stranahan appeared 13 times, but his last five appearances (1955-1959) were as a professional.

It looks like Chapman and Coe will retain that title in perpetuity.

Bob,

Can you please tell us about your rounds with Dick Chapman ?

About his playing "the spare shot" ?

We have on display at Winged Foot his 1 Iron. He actually filed this down. I think you could slice bread with it, it is that thin.
