Been buying books as I come across them the last few years.

I have:
The life and work of Dr. Alister MacKenzie

The Tom Doak Confidential Guide

The George Thomas book-The Captain

The George Bahto book on C.B. MacDonald-The Evangelist of Golf

The Spirit of St. Andrews

Discovering Donald Ross by Bradley Klein

Lost Links and Missing Links by Daniel Wexler

The Golden Age of Golf Design by Geoff Shackelford

I also own Legendary Golf Courses of the American East and Midwest, two great book although not on architecture per se, offer great looks behind the scene on some great clubs.

Is there anything else I really should own, and more importantly, read?

Thanks

Vog

The World Atlas of Golf is certainly the most comprehensive compendium of golf courses around the world.

Bill,

My golf course book collection is at about the 300 mark. So, I'll recommend my very first:

Sports Illustrated 18 Best Golf Holes in America

Dan Jenkins

Published 1966

Some people aren't Jenkins fans, but I still think the first paragraph of his writing about Pine Valley starting with "every man who has ever waggled a wedge" is my all time favorite golf architecture writing.

Planet Golf & Planet Golf USA by Darius Oliver are must-owns for anyone who loves golf travel and cares about golf architecture.

The best thing is that he is relentlessly honest, writes engagingly and used great photographers to illustrate his reviews.

Vog, firstly - welcome to GCA!

I second the nominations for Scotland's Gift by C.B. Mac , The Links by Robert Hunter & The Architectural Side of Golf by Wethered & Simpson.

I 2nd "The Links" by Robert Hunter.
I also recommend "Golf Course Architecture" by Mike Hurdzan. It teaches you to get rid of being ruled by romantic notions and to start to understand the importance of drainage and other logistical factors in good design. You will also get a good handle on the chronological steps for designing a  course in the modern age.

Bill...

I really like "Dream Golf" to see how an entire series of projects come together.

I also love HWW's "Following Through" essays...as when he talks about golf courses, he really gets to the feelings these courses evoke.
Sportsman/Adventure loving golfer.

I agree with Mac. I really, really enjoy reading "Dream Golf". Have read it 3 times now. All about how the Bandon resort came to be.

Thanks all. Realized there were a few I had and hadn't listed. Now I need to update my wish list. Since joining Prairie Dunes as a national member a few years ago, I have really escalated my appreciation of golf course architecture.

Paul Daley's five Golf Architecture books are great because they seem to hit all the topics and provide a variety of opinions.  They are the first I lend out to friends who are interested in gca.

Paul Daley - Links Golf

I believe it is his best book because it not only discusses architecture but also erosion and other issues that could impact the future of some treasured links.
