Sunday Special: Post your favorite US Open story

Upon escorting his 15 year-old son to sectional qualifying, William noticed his son had incorrectly completed his entry form and made him do it again, this time, instructing his son to sign his full name on the entry form because the U.S. Open was the national championship, which demanded a formal name.

Thus, his son signed the form "William Payne Stewart" and a lasting love affair with the U.S. Open began.

1967 I was a Caddy at Baltusrol. Sunday before the open I caddied for a fellow by the name of Bob Creasy who at the  time was head of the PGA. Jack Nichlaus was playing a practice round with being Dean Beaman and  they joined us for the 10th and 11th hole.

The same day in the afternoon I went out to watch some of the pros practice. On the 8th Ben Hogan's  caddy asked  me to get Mr. Hogan a soda., I dashed over to the halfway house, handed the soda to Mr. Hogan. Not only did he not pay me for it, he also did not have the courtesy to say thank you. At the time I was not that familiar with Mr. Hogan. I soon found out though that his reputation was well deserved.

As some might remember (I tried to find the old thread), I was the leaderboard captain on the 17th hole at Winged Foot in 2006.  On Sunday, that was the start of the madness... Monty holes a 65 footer to tie, Ogilvy chips in and Phil made par after hitting his drive into a trash can.

After Phil made his putt, my volunteers asked if they could leave the platform and follow Phil for the last hole.  Monty was on the 18th green at the time (Ogilvy in the fairway) so I told them to stay on the off chance Monty lost a share of the lead... I wanted to make sure Phil (and the gallery) knew where things stood before he teed off.  Sure enough, Monty doubles 18 and we lower the windows to post the score.  The whole crowd goes eerily silent and ERUPTS when we put up the numbers.  It still gives me goosebumps to this day.

Phil and Bones smiled at each other and then Phil stepped up to the tee.  The rest is history.
