U.S. Open - Order of Alternates
« on: June 04, 2013, 10:00:20 AM »
With all the various qualifying sites, I was (still am) curious as to how the order of alternates is determined by the USGA. Is it predetermined based on qualifying site? Does it depend on score? Play-off performance?

For all those who are curious - the answer is that is a subjective assessment based on qualifying site - see link:

As most have you have probably seen on the Golf Channel, Brandon Matthews (the 2011 GAP Junior Boys' Champion and 2012 GAP Patterson Cup Champion) chipped in for a miraculous par on his last hole yesterday (after taking an unplayable lie penalty) to finish at 2 UNDER.  Gavin Hall birdied his last four to knock Brandon out and make him 1st Alternate from Purchase.  I spoke with Brandon last night and he says he will be hanging out at Merion for the week and waiting to see if he gets in (not a bad way to spend the week).   If one of the players who qualified from Purchase withdraws obviously Brandon takes that spot, up to a certain date.  After a certain date, don't know what that date actually is, the reallotment procedure kicks in.

Quite a finish for both Brandon and Hall:
