Tuesday, May 28, 8 PM EST. The Golf Channel will be showing the Monday playoff between Jack and Lee. Might be cool to look at the course then compared to upcoming US Open.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Factoid: Trevino was the first player to win both the US Open and The Open in the same year since Ben Hogan did it in 1953 (Hogan also won the Masters that year.

Watching right now; the video has been run through Filmlook for some reason, but it's a treat. Been a long time since I heard Frank Gifford and Bud Palmer work a golf telecast. They were part of the ABC crew along with Chris Schenkel, Byron Nelson, Jim McKay, Dave Marr, Henry Longhurst and Bill Flemming.

Looks like Merion played really firm and fast (at least by contemporary standards) in the 1971 Open. The fairways in particular seem to have been quite firm.

Very cool viewing. The course looks firm, fast and the rough very gnarly. Here's hoping that they leave the rough over five inches. That will be the primary defense. Obviously, slick greens will help, but it's the rough that might prevent many players from a lot of GIR's.

The most intriguing stat I've heard on the telecast thus far is that there were only 23 sub par rounds posted by the end of Saturday's play. I'm guessing that thirty will break par on Thursday this year. Not that par matters. The number should be all relative. Let's hope it's a Hall of Fame winner. That would suit the site!

Agree it looks great, but also amazing how many trees have come down since. 17th tee looked claustrophobic and heavily shaded.  Though I think the quarry on 16 looked more rugged and intimidating then than it does now.

And wow was Jack slow deliberate.

Terry, you really think that there will be 30 players under par after the first round? Granted, I've never played Merion, but if it's firm, I just can't believe that. But you're right, regardless of score, it's going to be great.

How good of a ball striker and shot maker was Lee Trevino? Was anyone better?

Remember this vaguely , nice to revisit.  Jim Simons sets up so strange to his putter.  Never saw anyone putt with their knees bent quite like his at this level.  Enjoying the show !

The first thing I notice compared to the flyovers the usga has put up on the us open website is how wide the fways seem. Seemed to be tons of fway way right on 18.

Nicklaus was indeed glacially slow.

It is also somewhat refreshing to see pins in the middle of the greens, rather than tucked 3-5 paces from the edge of the greens as they often are in modern tournament golf.
