Streamsong summer
« on: May 23, 2013, 09:04:05 PM »
I had a phone call from a fellow in Tampa who is a pretty avid golfer.  I asked him if he had been to Streamsong yet.   He has been there twice since the rates went down May 1st, and says the place was packed both times.

Maybe the quality of the golf and experience will continue to fill the tee sheets, in spite of a competitive price disadvantage.   The availability of carts will definitely be critical.

Bill,

I think Streamsong is offering rooms at $ 190 per night for the month of June if you make reservations in the next few days

I've made six trips to Streamsong in the last couple months.  I believe your friend caught two very rare days.   Take a look at the online tee times available...virtually within 20 minutes of your desired time you can have access the next day.

I was out last Sunday AM with a buddy who played college golf and is accustomed to walking in Kansas City humidity.  He essentially took a knee on the eigth tee box due to the sun exposure.   It is pretty intense this time of year.  I feel that walking from June 1st to October 1st will be extremely difficult and taken on by those who wish to save $50.  They will regret their decision.

I will say that the greens were in the finest condition (for late May in Florida) of any course I have seen in this part of the state.  Absolutely perfect.  Wonderful meld of speed and firmness.

Two issues that need some resolution in the next year at Streamsong are pin sheets and walking paths.  With greens that large and deep, a hole location sheet is a necessity.   Secondly,  there are a number of walks on both courses where there is no logical access point to get to the fairway from the tee box.  They have remedied a small amount of these areas with railroad ties, but more needs to be done.  It's a beachy slog all too often.

I'm very curious to see how much play occurs at SS in the summer months.

I suspect the locals are day trippers from Tampa and Orlando, and that $190 rate will come down.  Rates like that in summer won't attract you Yankees who would not enjoy 95* / 75% weather in June.

Bill,

After a cool, damp Spring I'd look forward to 95* / 75 %

Ben,

I don't see the need for pin sheets.

While the greens are large there are very few where you can't determine hole location

Plenty of people up here would trade their Memorial Day weekend forecast for 95/75.

Nice weather:

It is pretty rare for Florida to get to 95 degrees. We may go down Labor Day again.

While it rarely gets to 95 in the coastal areas, it certainly does get to 95 in Ft Meade.

While the summer resident rates are a good deal for Streamsong, they are still rather high compared to other options in Fl in the summer, especially since the rates don't come down in the afternoon.  I live 30 minutes away and will be playing streamsong once or twice this summer, but it still is too high to make it a regular stop.  The forecaddie necessity really makes it tough, most of my buddies won't walk in the summer.

The lack of an off shore breeze is a big factor.

I just don't see how SS is going to be a popular destination in the dog days of Summer. Hot and humid is hot and humid.

Their plan is two-pronged:

1.  Build a nice enough hotel that it will be attractive to large meeting groups even in the summer months.  This will not be in place until next year.  And,

2.  Get as much play from Tampa and Orlando in the summer as they can.

I don't think they expect to draw play away from northern resorts in the summer months.  But, a lot of people go to Disney World in the summer, so maybe it's possible a few will go to Streamsong, as well.

Good luck on #1 where spouses are often invited.... "Hey honey we're going to Florida for am meeting in July"--- "Wow, really? Where, Miami? Clearwater? Orlando?" ---- "No silly, the new hot spot - Ft Meade"

Would not want to the be the corporate planner who arranges that!

Best move for SS is to build/acquire some beachfront accommodations/bungalows and run a service for those who don't wnat to be "stuck" in Ft Meade all day. It is close enough to be feasible.

Also could be the obvious stay at the beach adn shuttle to golf but however they figure it out they should connect to the beach or, given the property on which they are located, build their own. Gators might have something to say about that however.

Greg,

Over many years I have attended many corporate, golf oriented boondoggles. By far, the vast majority have not included spouses.  For example, 4-5 times I was the guest of CSX when they used to own the Greenbrier. Spouses were never part of the deal.

I'll admit, CSX, a big entertainer, did invite spouses to the Masters (hell one time they even let me bring my teenage daughter!), but that was the only event of various invitations I got to golf resorts that included the wives.

I do, however, wonder about summer weather being an issue. Have to think morning rounds will be preferred.

Tim,

Admittedly not all programs include spouses but we have seen it a bit more of late and Cabo hosts its fair share corporate, incentive and meeting groups.

Streamsong is not an easy sell for most such groups and the folks runing it understand the challenges. That I know.

Not saying they will not be successful or even understand how they would define success for this segment of their business but it will be a challenge.

I stand by my opinion that they need to develop some modest accommodations at the beach to complement/support the inladn resort.

Greg,

Honestly, I had mixed feelings about Streamsong when I visited during the Ren Cup. My biggest concern was probably the start of the C&C course. I just think it is too hard and is a design that risks turning people off.

Tom's course was definitely my favorite, but somehow I felt like it was in the wrong place. By that I mean, it came across a a course that would be better as a private club with members that frequently played it than a resort course people play once or twice and possibly never return. There were just a number of shots - particularly into greens - that would be fun to play many times.

Golf architecture junkies will definitely enjoy Streamsong. I just wonder if golfers who usually play less sophisticated stuff will feel the same way.

Tim,

I was playing fairly well and felt the same way.

I call those starts: "round ruiners"

On the other hand, I loved the start on the Blue course.
It "eased you into the round with a nice, sporty opening hole and a good par 5 second hole.

On the Red, I can see you going through anywhere from several sleeves of balls to an even dozen before you hit the 9th tee

I think the Blue is a great course irrespective of it's "use" classification

I'm curious to see how their play is during the summer and hope to check it out for myself in the next couple weekends.  The mandatory forecaddie while using a cart is going to dissuade a lot of locals from heading over there.  I am a hardcore walker but probably won't walk when the real heat & humidity starts in July.  And frankly, it seems dangerous to walk in the summer afternoons given the thunderstorms and relative lack of shelters on the course.

Does Streamsong have that many year-round caddies that they will maintain the mandatory forecaddie rule for those who take a cart?  It seemed that many of them were going back to their home courses for the summer months.

I think they will need forecaddies for riders until its easier to find your way around.   No cart paths, no signs, no easy returns, I can see unaccompanied foursomes getting lost and missing dinner.   ;D

The first tee (Blue) footpad caught fire, due to a lightening strike.

I have a photo of it.

I'll email the photo to someone who knows how to post photos, just send me your email address
