Joe Bausch

Non-returning nines at US Open sites

The 2013 site has non-returning nines.  What other US Open sites had non-returning nines?  I can think of Pebble quickly, but what others say since 1924?

Baltusrol - both the lower and upper are traditional 9 out, 9 in.

Do we consider the 9s at Erin Hills (2017) to be returning? I guess I'd say yes, but it's a pretty long hike from the 9th green to the clubhouse.

Then again, it's about an equally long hike from the 18th green to the clubhouse and the 1st and 10th tees are fairly close together. Really, it just seems like the whole course is non-returning.

Was Torrey's South course once nine holes?

I noticed the 8th green is very close to the 18th tee, which made me wonder.

No Matthew. There was originally supposed to be only 18 on the whole property, designed by Bell Sr. After his death and then his son moving forward with the project, it changed to a 36 hole affair. So as far as we know, since we don't have to original 18 holes plans available anymore (that's another story onto itself), what you see at 8/18 was by original Bell jr. design.
