One-Hit Wonders
« on: May 19, 2013, 01:36:20 PM »
Mac's thread about resume gaps got me thinking about this. It's easy enough to say that you need to play a few C&A or C&C or MacRayBanks or Travis or Doak or AMac or Hurdzan or or or

What's tougher is how to categorize, classify or situate the one-hit wonders, like Wolf Point.

Beyond Wolf Point (which apparently occupies a lot in Valhalla) what are the one-hit wonders from architects who did/have done nothing else of similar stature?

I thought this was pretty neat.

A couple of winters ago a member dropped this off in the golf shop for me knowing I spent my summers at Sankaty Head.

Arthur Croome at Liphook springs to mind.

I know Chet Williams has done a bunch of courses with Nicklaus Design but I don't know what he's done on his own besides Whispering Pines.

Most of those are under the Nicklaus Design umbrella.

WERE THESE THE NICKLAUS/DOAK LIMTED PARTNERSHIPS (IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD) OF THE DAY? I'LL NEED MORE BEFORE I ALLOW THEM.

This is a slippery slope with current architects, where you may insult someone who may have several fine designs to their credit, but only one has some level of notoriety.  Black Sheep is a terrific design by David Esler, but I really couldn't tell you what else (solo) he's done.  Same goes for Todd Eckenrode and Barona Creek.  The Baxter Spann group (forget the name) and Black Mesa.

There's traditional notoriety (on magazine rankings or hosts big tournaments) vs. well-known on GCA.  Black Sheep and Barona Creek are or were on some lists, but they're not really nationally known.  Wolf Point is strictly GCA known (for a reason).  Nuzzo's other stuff?  Even less so.

Blake,

I did not know that Nuzzo was the architect of record at Wolf Point...I'm glad that someone of perception brought that fact to light. What other work of Mike's would match his (by all accounts remarkable) effort at Wolf Point?
