Thanks David.

I found the decision regarding the course record rather amusing.
So if someone shoots a 68 this summer, that's the new course record?
and if someone shoots 59 going forward, the 61 will still stand as the old record?
seems a bit complicated

It's a very simple and logical decision considering the fact that the par of the course will change .

Interestingly (to me at least), I played this hole yesterday and even with the extra length would play as a par 4 given the wind I experienced!

Hello Alister,
Yours is a respectable position and it is great they are honoring the man who shot the 61.
i just happen to believ he deserves even more respect.

They lenghtened the hole 50 yards.
Plenty of courses have added 500 yards.
Courses are modified and renovated all the time.
ANGC for example, but many, many others.
Virtually every time the USGA goes to a site par is lowered, often by shortening a hole.
Course records remain.
what's next a "windy day" course record.
I'd venture that the 61 the gentleman shot 40+ years ago was done on a course that played tougher day in and day out to an expert than it does today, given the equipment advantages of today, despite the fact that one plays slightly longer to an expert.

What happens when the ProV 3 comes out and they're driving it 400 and a few of the par 4's are made par 3's? ;D ;D

That's a fantastic insight you have just given and in the very same wind you experienced the outward nine would have several holes which played above par .

The wind you played in is not the prevailing wind .

On an old historic links course things might not conform to the so called uspga norm and thank god for that . Amen

Don't know what a "uspga norm" is but I'm sure I wouldn't like it.
So Amen is right
Look forward to returning to one of my favorite places
