Aerial of the Day #328 (and 329) - 2 May 2003
« on: May 02, 2003, 06:26:49 AM »
The first one today has a few of the architect's signature
items, at least from previous aerials, including several wide
yet shallow greens fronted by bunkers.

For the stumper today, we continue with what  seems to be
a 'theme' for the week that one might think this course was
in another state.

And if you knew who designed this course, you also might
think this were in yet another state.

The name of #1 is also the name of a number of things in
this major city it borders, streets, plazas, etc.

A pinched fairway or two, I see.

All in the Family could be theme #2 for the week.

For #2, I was quite surprised to see the long distances
between greens and tees here.  Not what I would think for
architects of this neo genre.

Bunkering here is probably pretty good.  From above,
reminds me of their sometime boss' work.  Go figure.

An area of the country where they never slice 'em.

#1 is a Top 100 course (in at least one pub), but some say
it's overrated.  One of the shortest Top 100 courses around.

Little Feat sang the praises of this town (and mentioned this
course, sort of).

The Official dessert of the south?

For #2, one might think this were in Boston, based on who
designed the course.  A Diamond of a state based on the
name.

Really a part time job, the architects here and they first
design, I believe.

A HOT place for golf?  Or what?

1st One, a PCR

"That's a ____, oh golly, I'm hot today"

2nd one always struck me as interesting given the prevalence/use of trees

#1 has a fantastic front side, but the back finishes poorly with its parallel fairways.

Possibly the architects best effort.

Ancient membership.

Held a Walker Cup in the not so distant past.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't get this until now.   :-[

I don't know how many times I have almost wrecked my car on this roadway by trying to sneak a peek through the bushes.

This is a good "Walker" course, especially since there is never anyone on it!!!   :D

Personal note: My one chance to play here -- it thunderstormed the night before and the course had to close. Never got to reschedule.   :(

For #1, The Allman Brothers professed to eat one and Tim
Burton brought to screen James and his Giant one.  All still unpicked.

Anyone ever drive on I-85 by Gaffney, SC?  That's the biggest one around.

For #2, like the riddle for a recent AOTD, the answer is:  "Her
New Jersey".  What's the question?

Famous battle site in Beantown designed this course?

This course resides outside the capital's City Limits by about 35 miles.

#1 is Peachtree GC, in Atlanta, GA (actually a few miles
outside city limits, near Chamblee), designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.

Peachtree hosted the 1989  Walker Cup

other clues include:

RTJ Sr. recognizable features

"All in the Family week" = Bobby, Rees, and Sr. all designed
ATODs this week

'Peachtree' is all over Atlanta, several roads, plaza, etc.

Little Feat song "Oh, Atlanta" referred to Peachtree Street.

Official dessert of the South?= Peach cobbler

"The Allman Brothers professed to eat one" =album "Eat a Peach"

Tim Burton brought to screen (produced) James and his Giant Peach.

"All still unpicked." = on the "tree" still

"Anyone ever drive on I-85 by Gaffney, SC?  That's the
biggest one around" = the large spherical water tower just of
the highway, painted like a peach after the region's biggest
crop.

#2 is Delaware Springs, in Burnet, TX, designed by the
Bunker Hill 'boys', Dave Axland and Dan Proctor.

The upside-down layout is here:

with a few pics here:

http://www.delawaresprings.com/Course%20Guidelines/Course%20Guidelines.htm

from the web site:

http://www.delawaresprings.com/

The GCA write-up with a few pics, can be seen here:

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/Delaware_Springs000221.html

other clues include:

might think this was in Delaware

or Boston, based on Bunker Hill design firm

"Bunkering here is probably pretty good.  From above,
reminds me of their sometime boss' work.  Go figure"  known
for their bunker work for themselves and when they work
with C&C ("boss").

"An area of the country where they never slice 'em" =
they "Hook 'Em" (Horns) 'round these parts.

"A Diamond of a state based on the name." = Delaware (also
the "First State")

Really a part time job, the architects here and they first
design = shapers/constructors for C&C the other part of the time

"A HOT place for golf?  Or what? " refers to the current thread on TX golf.

"What did Dela ware?  Her New Jersey".  :P

"Famous battle site in Beantown designed this course?" =
Battle of Bunker Hill

"This course resides outside the capital's City Limits by about
35 miles" = TV show "Austin City Limits"
