Orchard Lake Country Club Approves Major Golf Course Renovation
Golf Course Architect Keith Foster to Oversee the Project

ORCHARD LAKE, Mich., March 8, 2012--The members of Orchard Lake Country Club have approved a major renovation of its classic, rolling course originally designed by Harry S. Colt and Charles H. Alison.  Keith Foster, who only works on classic course renovations, has been retained to redesign the bunkers and recommend additional improvements that will bring the course up to current standards.

“Orchard Lake is a truly unique course with all the fantastic design elements that Colt and Alison brought to their projects,” stated Foster, who has worked on several Colt and Alison courses in his career.  “Our goal is to bring out all the greatness that Colt and Alison originally intended, while making the course fun to play for all levels of golfers and economically and ecologically sustainable.”

There are three key elements to the Orchard Lake renovation.  First and foremost is the reconstruction of all the sand bunkers on the course using state of the art drainage systems and materials.  “Keith Foster recently redesigned the bunkers at perennial PGA Tour stop Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas,” said OLCC Green Superintendant Aaron McMaster.  “Colonial had serious infrastructure issues with their bunkers but, since the renovation, they rank among the best on tour and the drainage is so good they can be back in play within an hour of a heavy rain storm.  We expect to match that kind of performance.”

The second key element of the renovation is the resurfacing of all the greens with one of the latest strains of hybrid bent grass.  New bent grasses have been engineered to withstand the hot Midwest summers while also being much more resistant to disease.  These new surfaces will also allow Mr. McMaster and his crew to deliver consistent green speeds every day throughout the golf season and to use less water and fertilizer in the process.

The final element is the conversion of large areas, which are typically not in play, from Kentucky blue grass to tall fescue grasses.  The blue grass areas required significant water, fertilizer, and maintenance, while fescue requires virtually no water and limited fertilizer and maintenance.

“We are so proud of the Orchard Lake members,” said OLCC President Craig Valassis.  “They recognized that we had infrastructure issues with the golf course and they stepped up to not only fix those issues, but also create a course with improved playability, lower maintenance needs and a more ecologically responsible design.”

Early preparation for the project has already begun, but the work begins in earnest on July 31 when the golf course closes for the season.  The project team expects the course to re-open in late May or early June of 2013.

Mr. Foster is busy.  He's also doing the restoration of Philly Cricket Wissahickon, which I believe starts later this year.

We will be doing a bunch of work at Hollywood Golf Club in New Jersey this fall, although some things on the agenda will have to be put aside until after the 2014 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur.

We are also working on Medinah #1, but that work should not be characterized as a restoration as it involves some significant changes to the routing, and the greens will be our own design.

DRoss' Country Club of Buffalo. Work should be done by end of May. Great example of fairways being widened diagonally in drive zone. Proof that horizontal and vertical are not the only notions in wonderful architecture.

Mike, I'd say that our club president had good intentions with his video but it's very crudely done, not to mention most of his pictures were taken while things were still under construction.  Six bunkering is much more intimidating and closer to the green than the previous bunker but it was filled in two feet to allow older members easier access in and out of the bunker.  However, none of that shows up in this particular photo.

He used a lot of photo shop to fill in areas of sand, fairway, approaches, native grass that took all the dimension and depth out of the photos.  What has depth on the old photos, once photo shopped they lost contours, etc.  None of our native grass has been planted since we didn't finish the project until almost thankgiving, fairways were still thin and what is not seen on any photo graph is the eyebrows of the bunkers are planted in fine fescue that we will let grow to 4-5 inches and let it go reddish brown once summer kicks in to match the native fesuce areas to be planted this spring....if that ever happens around here!

Mark, you will have to let me know when your planning to be around and I can fill you in on more of the details that went into the renovation/restoration but removal of the trees and style of bunkering has really brought the hilly topography of the property out and it really is a nice piece of property.

I also believe our pres may have borrowed some of your photos  ;)

Niall, working with Foster was great.  He only does three projects a year so he was on-site a day and half to two per week for the entire project.  I've been on projects where you may see the lead architect three to five times total.  Not saying one is right or wrong but for our situation we needed a guy who was on-site a lot.

Also, Moraine is a cool track since they detreed it....it's a cool sleeper!  Played Columbus CC a few years back, neat old Ross but my goodness it's more aboretum than golf course....they need an army of chain saws there.

An old county owned course with a very rich history on PGA and LPGA.  The original architect is not a notable one.  But, it is a nice parkland layout and has plenty of potential for a great renovation, not restoration, per se.  Keller in St. Paul, Minn.  Richard Mandell is taking next 2 years with the work. Sorry if that is off topic regarding renovation VS restoration.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Word on the street in Akron is Portage CC (W.B. Langford) is pumping in $1.8 million for renovations.

I don't know the details but I hear tees, drainage, tree removal, and maybe bunkers are on the to-do list.

Thank you Aaron
I am an admirer of Keith's work &
I thought the video was well done, at least I could envision what the pictures were mostly showing.
6 may look different in person, but it does look less bold in the approach pictures
Enjoy your course when it is ready
Cheers
