Nashville to Dulles from the air
« on: April 17, 2013, 07:53:53 PM »
Flew from BNA to IAD last night, departing 6pm CDT.  Saw a golf course from the air somewhere closer to Nashville; not sure if it was in TN or KY.  Our basic flight path, as far as I could tell, was departing south from BNA and looping around, clockwise, to the northeast.  We did fly over Charleston, WV (I noted the placement of roads, airports, stadiums, and islands) after it was dark.

I recall one particular hole had a very aggressive, very long centerline feature to it.  Meaning, not a circular principal's nose, but a longer feature dividing the fairway into left and right sides.

Conditioning looked to be fairly higher-end, from the air; don't recall any houses on the property, but I could be mistaken.  Looked like a newer design, maybe past 15 years or so.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I also flew over 1757 Golf Club on Monday morning, en route.  This looks somewhat interesting-any thoughts?

Thanks

Found it-it was Olde Stone, in Bowling Green KY.

Olde Stone was going to be my guess. It has a great reputation in Kentucky among those who have played it, though it's still relatively new (<10 years) and a bit isolated from the population centers in the state. I thought I might play it this spring but it looks like I won't be able to fit it in.

Olde Stone is a nice track. Really disliked the 1st and 10th, but 16 pretty good holes. Frequented by Kentucky tour pros like Kenny Perry, JB Holmes and Josh Teator. I believe Matt Killen teaches there. Arthur Hills design.

Looking at a course map on their website -- not a guest-friendly one -- I'd say it's the 7th hole which has a long, messy strip splitting the fairway.  600 yard hole.

Should be in good condition - every inch was sand-capped.

Doug, disappointed you didn't touch base with The Bogey if you were in Nashvegas for any length of time.

The 10th hole has been significantly re-constructed.  Lot of dirt moving last time I was there (Fall 2012).

I hope to go back in the next week or two.

I've often told friends that #1 is the hardest opening hole I've ever encountered --- no bunkers, no water hazards.  Some OB on the right side, but my high scores have as much to do with the second shot carry and the green.  I putted straight off the green the very first time I played Olde Stone.

They are resodding fairways and approaches with zoysia grass last fall and spring. They removed the bentgrass.
