Boiling Springs Update

I spent yesterday on site in Oklahoma.  The visit started out at 65 degrees and ended at 35 degrees, but the progress of construction was good.  Below are a few updated photos of the renovation.  We should be complete in a month or so and hope to open in mid-summer.  If you find yourself in western Oklahoma sometime I highly recommend paying a visit.  Whether you like the design or not, the site is quite special and the golf will be very affordable.

Hope all is well with you.  Are you still down in South America?

We are going to sod most of the disturbed areas with a combination of tall fescue and bermuda.  The cool season will be as an accent around the bunkers in out of play areas, and it will be allowed to grow to seed-head height.  I would love to treat all the bunkers this way, but the course is public so playability is a major concern.  Even so, we will keep the bermuda slopes around the bunkers in in-play areas at around 3 inches.  Some sprigging will be necessary in areas less prone to erosion and on tee tops.

Sod is our single largest line item in the budget, but it helps when you don't need to buy sand, gravel, pipe, etc.  The entire job is being done for less than $750,000 including the contributions of city and convict labor.

"convict labor" - now there's a line item, in the Bill of Quantiies, that you don't see everyday....

Inmates are used for manual labor and are seasonal (I am still not sure why inmates would be seasonal).  Most of them are substance abuse types.  The contractor says they have been very useful, other than the odd package droped in a waste basket from time to time.
