Misc Masters thoughts...

Just a place to make observations that come to your mind...

The back of Nick Watney's shirt today (Sat) looks like one of my daughters failed geometry projects.

Can someome tell me how they are able to mow their greens without making lines? Is it possible that they mow their greens in one direction?

On the Masters website, the first pic of #5 has a front pin below the "false front".  Is this position ever used during tournament week?!  Wish it was if not!

Chris,

They mow the greens up and back on the same pass with the hand mowers, thats why you can not see any lines on the greens.

Cheers.

Seriously, when did the guys who yell after every shot shot infiltrate Augusta?

Is that 14th green close to the Mackenzie original?

That is a good question and I sure would like to know the answer. At the risk of invoking the f(air)-word, we just saw both Couples and Day land nice shots maybe 15-20 feet right of the flagstick and see their balls wind up 40-50 feet from the hole.

At the very least, a very severe green. ;)

At least as early as 1990, when Nick Faldo beat Ray Floyd on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. That marked the appearance of "You The Man!" As Dan Jenkins wrote in his Golf Digest summary, referring to Floyd's hooked second in the playoff on the 11th hole, "You the man, but you wet!"

I'm semi-serious here....

The tournament committee should move up, by one hour, the starting time Sunday for every pairing save for one -- the last one.

Then folks can see what two players, playing at an appropriate rate of play, can do under tournament pressure with no waiting on any hole.

I bet those two would finish in 3 hours tops.

Three on the front side and fifteen on the back are my favorite holes for watching for watching in person.

What happened to all the Europeans?

Phil,

I think the tee times should be moved up for another reason.

The late day shadows.

It makes play more difficult

The telecast should finish an hour earlier, but, no one consulted me on the decision...................yet  ;D

Yes, I heard the same idiot yell "Ri-donkulous" at least twice.

I thought these people got removed.

The starting times would be perfect if pace of play wasn't awful.

No way. The rest of the field would slow WAY down. The guys in contention will want to be able to see what the final group is doing, so they'll go extra slow just to let the last group catch up. As you mentioned, the last group will play fast. They'll start about three holes down and catch the second-to-last group within an hour.

If Cabrera wins tomorrow, what does that do for his legacy? How do we rate him in his generation and all-time? Is he a Hall of Famer? Is he a top 5 player of this generation who flies completely under the radar? He's like an Argentinian John Daly with a better record and less drama, but the same gut, power, and penchant for chain smoking.

One of these years there will be a playoff that requires more than two holes. And the way it is right now, there is not much light left after two holes of a playoff. The year that we have to come back out on Monday morning to play one sudden death hole is the last year the Sunday tee times are as late as they are.

Random thought: maybe it's being here on this site and reading what folks have said about Augusta, but for some reason it feels like this year I'm seeing the course for the very first time, and/or with fresh eyes. The scale of the rises and falls and contours has never struck me so clearly, nor has the lovely, subtle, almost gentle nature of some of the choices and challenges the course and those greens presents.

I was close to that green a few years ago and Ken Duke was putting down there. He was playing with Steve Flesch who came over and told him not to bother, they never put the flag there. That is a really interesting green.

I know some work was done to flatten the back left portion of the green to create a new pin position.

So the green itself appears relatively unchanged with the big false front.  The big mound short left of the green is long gone, lost to the aerial game.  But the general contours are definitely Mackenzian!

What is the tree house's opinion on the pimento cheese sandwich?

We just made some at my club for an event and they were delicious.  Can't wait to taste the ANGC version.

I just hope I don't drop the ball and forget to get one....
