One thing that would be interesting to add to this is the region where each of us grew up/went to college.  Most of my friends who grew up in Chicago caddied during the summer, but I don't know anyone that I grew up with in Southern California who caddied while growing up.  I don't even know of any caddy programs for high school aged kids at private courses in Southern California, assuming caddies are even available.  I suppose that's largely based on the fact that in SoCal, the golf season is 12 months long, while in the Midwest, the golf season largely lines up with summer vacation.  The few times I played with caddies or forecaddies in L.A., they were definitely not students.  I did work at a golf course in college and for a couple years after, but caddying wasn't really an option.

Caddied before going to college: YES  Years: 3
Caddied during college: NO  Years: N/A
Caddied after college: NO Years: N/A
Highest rank achieved as a caddie: N/A (middle of the pack)
Received a caddie scholarship: NO
Number of rounds you play a year: ~60
Number you play with a caddie: ~6
If you do use caddies, is it generally at your home course, while playing an away game, or both:  AWAY (historically)

Typically only had a caddie when visiting clubs with programs - ~10% of rounds last year.

Joined club last year that has junior caddie program (call ahead only - few/no standby guys in a yard/shack), so eager to use caddies at home this season as well.  Our club does allow us to walk and carry at any time (one of the major draws for me, besides quality of course, etc), and I expect a majority of my rounds will still be carrying my own.

I almost forgot my recent caddie experience in the HHH...38 holes in 3 hours and 40 minutes at Double Eagle on a hot & humid day last July.  That was enough for me for all of 2012!

When I caddied, the rate was $1.75 for 18 holes and $1.25 for 9. If your player had a good round you usually got $2.00. Another aspect of the caddy business was working on the driving range. It was termed as shagging, you positioned yourself to the distance your player was hitting to and you served as a target and then collected the balls. If the range was busy and your player was hitting wedge shots you had to have your head on a swivel to avoid getting hit and this was before hard hats. The renumeration for this was $0.50.
I caddied at the Riverside Golf and Country Club a Donald Ross course just outside Saint John, New Brunswick

I have only used a caddy a few times.  Only when traveling as there aren't any courses within an hour or more of me that have caddy programs.  I understand that if it costs $100 a round it would get expensive but I love having a caddy and while some one good and others not so much it always been a good experience.  Most of the  times i have had a caddy I am playing as a single at a resort course Doral, Sea Island so having some company is a bonus.

Remembered I did caddy twice as an  adult,  When my club at the time hosted the New York State Women's Amatuer I caddy two days In a row.  Had a blast, refused my tip and worked for free.

I'm sure that's true but I would be careful before assuming it's a causal relationship. I think the causal connection is that there are a few small enclaves of the golf world where caddie golf is still strong - cf. Bill's point about the difference between Chicago and Southern California. It'd be even more striking if more Brits and Europeans posted in this thread.

Always try to use caddies if available- prefer high school/college kids who are trying to get a start in life. No problem with projocks but prefer when they are not carrying doubles. I've had some of my worst caddies at NGLA, Shinny, and Brooklline. Double bagging dogs that just wanted the $100 a bag. Best I've had were at CPC and SFGC. Had some great kids at Prairie Dunes. Chicago kids are hard to beat for hustling around on hot summer days.
