Rollback 2

#2 (aka "Bifurcation, Baby!")

Rich, bifurcation would be "no rollback" 2, i.e. tournament ball

I vote that we create a separate forum for rollback threads. They're really starting to put the complaining about "OT" threads and photo tours into perspective.

I was going to let my no-vote count as an abstention to reflect my belief that in the end it really doesn't matter.

But since you asked nicely, I'll vote for Rollback #1 (across the board reduction in distance).

Jason,
Thanks for the bump ;)

I happen to love phote threads and consider them hugely ON Topic.

With equipment as one of the largest, if not the largest drivers of a need (perceived or not) for architectural renovation, redesign, or
consideration when building a new course, I don't consider rollback threads to be OT either.
With some of the more creative and thoughtful minds in golf often visiting this site, I think finding out some quantified opinions might be useful, (You are correct in that we get enough of the commentary about rollbacks)

Can I put you down for no rollback? ;D

Thanks Brent
You always provide very insightful commentary and have certainly made me rethink many positions

The whole topic feels conflicted for my part. I have just recently made an equipment and ball change that bought me those last few precious yards off the tee to be able to drive it up on top of the ridges on several holes at my club (Ellis Maples 1960).

I used to just bang those tee shots into the steep upslopes just short of the top and now with my new Ping driver and (yes) Pro V1 with a solid swing I can play those holes as intended. If there were 10% rollback tomorrow I'd be back to hitting long layup shots off of upslopes. The fact it would put some other folks in the same boat wouldbe small consolation.

Brent,
That's why I feel it's important to quantify people's opinions, rather than just another thread where luddites like me bitch about the hot equipment.
Your opinion stated above would probably be voiced by my PGA colleagues as well.
Thanks for your participation as I've read your insightful comments, but never knew exactly where your final opinion would be if you had to vote.

Sorry, Jeff, but I didn't read post #1 closely enough.  You are right to surmise that my vote is for "no rollback/tunamint ball" (aka "bifurcation").

Thanks, Jeff. Beyond the options offered in your poll, if I were to have a "luddite bitching" complaint it really boils down to a wish list with one item...

In the late 1990's I wish USGA would have tested Titleist Professional ball, using something like the current test rig, at a clubhead speed of about 140mph. However far that Titleist Professional flew at 140mph their Rule should have limited overall distance for any conforming ball to no more than that number, when struck at 140mph.

I think that would be very similar to about a 12-15% "rollback" today except it would have happened with only minor grumbling from the industry or players. But that ship had sailed by about 2003-2004, at latest.

I don't have a strong opinion on the matter, but I would prefer a less intrusive solutions.  Given that, I would at least like to try

No rollback - tournament ball

This game is hard enough already for 99.9% of us.

No rollback but a tournament ball for all sanctioned professional events.

Option 2 seems complicated to design but would keep the ball manufacturers fat and happy with R&D testing and patents so they'd probably be supportive.

10% isn't enough.

Your dictated request for no discussion and only votes was a real turn off. Probably like playing Rich Harvest Farms.

Maybe so few votes because the preview makes it look like a aprils fools day thread. Maybe change the title a bit?

Fair point.
There was another roll back thread and didn't want to turn people off with another discussion thread on roll back
but I managed to anyway ;D ;)
as well as by having another rollback thread and not inviting discussion
so I'm two for two on turn offs for opposite reasons ;D

No rollback.

As a practical matter, I voted for rollback 2. I think it is the proper minimal change option.

You didn't offer my real preference which is roll back to the feathery distance. I would prefer to play the game hitting at targets that are still within range to see well, and carrying 1/2 as many clubs. Also, upset the par apple cart and have even 4 and 5 or maybe even more shot holes. I am sick of courses with six sets of tees to molly coddle the golf haters that insist reaching a green in regulation or they won't play. So don't play. I don't care. The ground over which long holes are played should have enough movement and sand or other reasonably small hazards so as to make choosing each shot interesting. If we get away from the current putting competitions that are held, maybe no one would be bellyaching about not being able to anchor their putter in their fat guts.  :P
