The comprehensive publicly accessed golf in the USA guide
« on: March 31, 2013, 03:54:24 AM »
Good day!

I am frequent traveler to the US and on every visit, I seem to face the same problem - most good golf courses (or at least highly ranked ones) in this country dont' have public access. I am not discussing here whether this is good or bad, corresponds to the principles of democracy and the such.

But I would rather suggest to create the public access golf guide to the US courses (unless of course there is already such a thing). We all know the great public courses like Bandon, Pebble, Whistling Straits, Kiawah, Bethpage. But I believe there are hundreds and hundreds good to great golf courses that get overlooked, just because they dont' find their spots on the major rankings from where they're driven out by their private peers.

For example, top100golfcourses web-site has more than 30 courses in their Texas ranking but only a couple have public access. So, what is the point in such a ranking?

Looking forward to your ideas and thoughts.

Daniel Wexler's book - The American Golf Resort Guide would be a good resource too.

There's a copy for sale here - http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=5810624543&searchurl=an%3Dwexler%26kn%3Dgolf%26sortby%3D17%26sts%3Dt%26x%3D-707%26y%3D-657

"The truth about golf courses has a slightly different expression for every golfer. Which of them, one might ask, is without the most definitive convictions concerning the merits or deficiencies of the links he plays over? Freedom of criticism is one of the last privileges he is likely to forgo."

It has been posted before as an Excel spredsheet.  I have a copy of it which I could post if it cannot be found.

Ben, if you find it, please, let me know.
I don't wanna bother the gentlemen on this forum by creating countless "recommend me a golf course in XXX Area" threads. ;D

That's what I found - http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,42908.0.html

Ivan,

That's the thread.  I thought there was a spreadsheet attached to one of the posts.  I have made  some modifications to the version I have.  If you want it, please feel free to PM me and I can send it to you directly.
