Guess the location
« on: March 29, 2013, 12:21:02 AM »
Below are some construction photos of a renovation we are currently working on.  The course is an affordable public facility in small town America.  See if you can guess where it is located and what the character of the land reminds you of.  If anyone shows interest I will reveal the location and name in a few days.  It should be one well worth visiting, and will be open later this summer.  Have fun

Jeff:

It's an interesting mix of bunker styles for one course, wherever it is.  But it could be about anywhere, based on the pics, except Florida.  I'll be curious to find out the answer, just because I'm curious where a small town is investing money in a renovation.

Trying to figure it out.  Looks like the deciduous native trees haven't started growing leaves yet.  Is that dormant bermuda grass?  I'll guess it's east of the Mississippi River.

If the photos are recent, there's no snow, so now we are south-eastern USA. I'm guessing North Carolina.

You're progressing quickly...  Thanks for the photos. Looks interesting.  You weren't kidding when you said there was topo/elevation change...

Is it a public owned by a municipality or State, or a privately owned-public golf course?

I'm going with something in far NW S.Carolina or eastern edge of Smokies.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

The course is owned by a municipality.  It is in a transition zone (bermuda fairways, bent greens and some use of cool season grasses in the out roughs).  The native soil is almost exclusively sand.  Consequently, there is no pipe or gravel in any of the greens (they are built out of native material), and only a couple of the bunkers have required drainage.  Toward the end of the construction we are going to incorporate some "sand scapes" similar to the idea C&C implemented at Pinehurst #2.  Prior to the renovation the previous operator had tried to expand the irrigation system and turf areas of the course with limited success.  We want to return it to its native character and reduce the irrigated foot print.

Tom,

The bunker edging has only just started so in all but two of the pictures the bunker lines are not visible.  They were marked this week and edging is a very easy operation in the sand so another update should give you a better idea of what the final look will be.  Further, the lines are by no means final.

Rick,

Thanks for your restraint in not revealing the answer.  The topographic relief in the dunes is approximately 70 to 80 feet.

I'm shocked you've made it nearly an entire day without someone guessing...

I wouldn't give any more hints - the answer is available with very little research...

Did you happen to notice you have at least 3 greens - in the photos - that have a "dominant" tree behind the green that nearly looks identical - and the 4th green as a dominant tree - with a 'windswept look' in the opposite direction.... wierd...

Mahaffey was right, I was second. That part of Oklahoma has sone interesting land and gets overlooked for the quality of its out of the way small town courses.

When I first saw this I thought of Ardmore but there were too many trees. The terrain looks a lot like Dornick Hills.

Mike,

The site actually has some similarity to Prairie Dunes only there is more tree cover.  Much of western Oklahoma has been infested with cedar trees.  We have taken out quite a few and only made a dent.  The course was originally a Don Secrest design and he did a pretty good job with the routing.  Lots of great green sites

Sam,

Were you referring to good land in eastern Oklahoma or in the west?

I was thinking Arkansas or Missouri myself.

So that covers more guessing ground.

There is some really good land all over Oklahoma. The state is full of very good small town courses.

Blue star for Mr. Mallard.  However, doing a google search is tatamount to cheating in my book.  I still draw some of my plans and sketches by hand. ;D

Scott,

The A&M redo is coming along nicely.  Only a hole or two left to shape and grassing should commence in about a month.  The fairways will be sand capped and construction should be finished by late June/early July.  Opening should be in the fall.

Here is an update from a recent press conference. www.kbtx.com/news/local/headlines/Texas-AM-Golf-Course-Taking-Shape-Halfway-Through-Construction-200130981.html
