No, this is why the game needs its leadership to address the issue rather than wait for a defining moment to give them cover.

On the other hand the single moment could be anti-trust protection extened to the USGA, PGA or Tour, maybe Biden and Boehner can get that done.

Maybe at the next Open at St. Andrews, some player will let loose a drive and break the window of the Secretary's office in the R & A clubhouse.

When Bubba Watson hits a 481 yard cut shot that three hops over Rae's Creek and onto the 13th green.  He calmly two putts for eagle, leaving people in disbelief at what they just saw.

Absolutely.

At the Masters Mickelson will hit a whopper of a drive on 11. After he wedges his approach Hootie Johnson and Tom Fazio, who happened to be right there and who originally thought someone had chipped out of the woods, duck under the ropes and check a sprinkler head: 94 yards to the green.

Johnson and Fazio are so stunned that Johnson calls a press conference to announce next year's event will use a "Masters ball."  Fazio, following up on Hootie's request, recommends several changes to the course for the new ball, including new, shorter tees on several holes. It is hoped the new ball when combined with a shorter course will speed up play, increasing the tempo of the event for TV viewers.

Wait, that didn't happen. Forget it Patrick, the lessons learned will not involve I&B.

You want Hawtree to put a bunker in there too ?

Pat Mucci accepts his invitation to join Augusta and agrees to become the President.

Mucci then announces that a new Masters golf ball has been approved and will be used in the 2015 Masters, patents the name and specifications. He then announces that all ball manufacturer's can produce a ball with these specifications, subject to a 1 % donation to the charity of Augusta's choice.

Tom Doak,

That is probably my all time favorite GCA post.

Pat Mucci,

The reason Tom probably summed things up correctly is that the problem is like the frog not jumping out of the pot that has slowly been brought to boiling temperature.

From the first tee?

I hope the ball doesn't hit the huge original of the 1922 Mackenzie map that's hanging on the wall behind Peter Dawson's desk!  I had the good fortune to see it a few years ago and it is awesome at that scale.

Tom Doak, et. al.,

I was thinking about John Daly's play at TOC when Nicklaus was commenting and how out of touch Nicklaus, the greatest golfer who ever lived at the time, was so out of touch with Daly's game.

What truth there be in jest.

Can you imagine a drive from # 18 tee crashing through the window of the R&A ?

Would that not be the ultimate signal that it's time for a rollback ?

Pat,

What difference does it make that Nicklaus could not relate to Daly?

The 99th percentile golfer in the world cannot relate either?

When will the people that run golf clubs realize they don't need to prepare for the Tour if they're not coming?

Jack Nicklaus drove a ball thru the 18th green at TOC (with a 3-wood!) 40+ years ago. ;)

Jim,

It's obvious that the kids have once again succeeded in bringing you over the edge due to sleep deprivation.

You're a little disoriented and probably meant to post this on another thread.  ;D

David, rolling the ball thru the green with a big wind at your back is different from flying it through the upper floor window of the R&A. ;D

Pat,

The more I think about it, Tom Doak's comment wasn't just very funny. It probably is what it will take to bring change.

When they have to play The Open at St Andrews with tees on four different courses.. Oh wait -- that's already happened.

Tort reform that includes golf's ruling bodies?

If they had a decent enough lobby, it would never have gotten this far. All those presidents golfing, since Taft, and nobody thought of protecting the game any further than their own backyard. I bet CBM would've railed brilliantly, had he not been castrated by those seeking to make their own mark.

Adam,

Evidently, you've forgotten how President DDE's foray into influencing golf and golf course architecture at ANGC went.  ;D

I gave up hoping that the ball would be rolled back a few years ago Patrick.....Nicklaus has been harping about this since the 1980s...if they havent done it by now I dont think they will ever do it...unfortunately

long shot (?) scenario: could future water use restrictions cause it (less fairway to be maintained with a shorter ball)?

Does anybody think the golf ball is a problem for the bottom 99% of golfers?

How is this tail wagging the dog?

It's up to the individual club operators to think with their big head instead of their little one.
