Greetings All - I am hosting of a play-day at Hershey CC.

When:

I have two tee times lined up for Tuesday June 4th 9:30 AM on the West course

Hershey West: 1930 Maurice McCarthy, hosted 1940 PGA and numerous other high profile tournaments over the years. Great golden age course that is generally under appreciated in my opinion.

I also have two times at 3:00 at Hershey Links - Originally known as Wren Dale - 2002 Hurdzan and Fry course that will be closed down at the end of the year. Very good modern course that is definitely worth playing

Joe Bausch's tour of the three Hershey courses is here: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,41106.0.html

The East will not be at its best as it will be freshly aerated the week before after it hosts the NCAA Div II championships 5/20-24.

Please PM me if you have interest. If we need additional room that should not be a problem.

Current Interest - please confirm sometime this week (5/28)
Myself
Chris Blakely
Chris DeNigris
J Cabarcos
Kris Shreiner

Room for three more.

Great idea Jim.

P.S.  Is HEast George Fazio instead of Tom?

Yes, the east is definitely George. It certainly has more of the "plays tougher than it looks" going for it than the other way around.

Jim - sounds great. I'd be game for whatever date works for the majority. I would most likely be  good just for 36 on one day.

Thanks!

I feel like the Links should be included if it will be NLE soon.

If this ends up being the majority opinion, then my reccomendation for the one day 36-hole option would be West-Links as I think the West is the most interesting "must-play" option of the three.

Jim, has a firm date been given on when Hershey Links is closing up shop?

Membership has been told 12/31/2013. I guess there is still some hope for a reversal, but I would think it is very slim as this was a Hershey Trust decision.

I thought Lester George was restoring one of the courses in Hershey. Any update?

I vaguely remember a masterplan to restore, or was it renovate, both HEast and HWest.  Jim?

Everything is on hold as far as that went. Lester was not the first architect that they had in to propose changes to the East over the years. I have no knowledge of the decision making and maybe Lester can chime in. I believe the plan was to eliminate the East with a new 18 designed by Lester over the land where the East's front nine is and using land that is contiguous with it. The land where the East's back 9 is was going to be a training center and have some cabins and the like. The East is generally an unloved course although I genuinely like it a lot and believe that it is a very honest and serious test of golf. It does lack a certain something however and I understand why many don't appreciate it.

All of the bunkers on both the East and West were rebuilt and the two courses were in great shape last year with a maintenance meld that suited the architecture in my opinion.

I would love to participate but my schedule will not allow it.  I can whole heartedly recommend to any GCA'er with time - - MAKE THE TRIP TO HERSHEY.

You will really enjoy the contrasting styles and three really solid pieces of ground.  Going out on a limb, I encourage as many as possible to play the East.  We don't celebrate big George Fazio/Wilson/Trent Jones courses on this site too often but Hershey East is a strong test of golf.
Brawny.  Play it!

I cannot make that day.  I've never played any of the Hershey courses but I've heard nice things.

John and Rory

The invite is good moving forward. All three courses are worthy and the East and West make for a really great day out IMO. Feel free to send a PM if you ever want to set up a day out here.
