I think he got the assignment about a year ago. It is great to read that work has commenced and to understand a bit about how it will be accomplished. The site appears to have lots of sandy material.
Here's to Gil building a strategic, interesting, challenging, firm course that people will want to play long after the games are a memory. My bet is that he and Jim Wagner, along with the Caveman shapers will acheive all of those things.

It had been expected over the last few weeks.  The last of the bureaucracy had to be taken care of.

The only thing that surprises me is that they are going to be hand clearing for the next several months with no heavy equipment on the property.

Having liveD in Rio as a kid and knowing the work ethic and habits of the Cariocans, it will be very interesting to see how long this job takes ;)
When Football stadiums are behind schedule it does not hold much hope for a golf course to finish on time!!

Joel,
This why I contributed to GCA. The info I get from other posters is just amazing. I would never have known Jim Wagner was at Doral. Thanks for the update.

Has anyone seen the site to know how much clearing that entails?

Two suggestions; Goats. Lets organize a geek group of volunteer enthusiasts to go down and help pull vegetation. (If they fall behind)

If that suggestion gets out in Rio, they will stop work altogether and wait for you!  :)

The site is more open than wooded, but there would have to be at least 3-4 holes in pretty dense vegetation.  I'm not sure why everything has to be cleared by hand ... I do know they are way into sustainability and want to save and transplant whatever they can.

The delays are not a surprise, the surprise will be if the delays donīt continue in the future! One step forward and two steps back come to mind. Anyways, I wish them all the best and hope this development is luckily enough to be out of the, Norm for Brazil!

At this pace, will the course be open in January of 2015?

Let's say they finish the building by December of 2013. Would 13 months be enough of a grow in for a January 2015 opening?

I think we can start a pool for opening day of this course.

I have to make a final visit next week to a course in Brazil, that should open in four or five months. Its only nine holes, and it was started about thirteen or fourteen years ago. The advantage they have is they only have ten partners so they didnīt have so many hands in the soup like the Olympic course. If we start a pool I will take the week before the Olympics.

Scott,
Dec.2013...were almost in April,,,hand clearing and no earth moving machinery yet...is zoysia even in Brazil?? 10-1 They import and do a nursery. Dec. 2013 is not realistic IMHO. As well as dec 2014! There is also a lot of rain in Rio but I believe the soil has decent drainage.

I am with Randy..only I will go the day before :D
Cariocans are notorious for their laissez faire attitude to life.
If this was in Sao Paulo at least a chance of 2015 :)
