I like Whistling Straits quite a bit and think its a top 50 USA course. It might be in Pete's top five for me, but it would be #5 because Sawgrass and Blackwolf are #3/4. I'm still missing a few as well. Its a bit overdone, but there's still a lot to like.
You would devote 10% of the US TOP 50 to Pete Dye? That's pretty strong stuff...can't say I agree.
I would give Pete five in the top fifty and four in the top 30! (PDGC, The Golf Club, Sawgrass, Blackwolf, Straits). And Kiawah would likely give him at least a shot at another course I would place highly. The Honors is right behind Whistling Straits, so I could even go one more.
Pete's stuff often isn't natural, but I'm not that interested in the trend of "fitting into the surrounding environment" and natural look and all that. Pete does a tremendous job of creating courses that keep my interest on every shot, but are still reasonably playable from the right tees for a decent golfer. Other than #17 at Sawgrass, there is always an option to miss, but the recovery will be challenging. At the same time, the bold play if well executed is generally rewarded, with the wrong miss punished severely. I think its fascinating.
With the seven courses listed above, plus Oak Tree, Long Cove, and Crooked Stick, I think there's a case that Pete deserves 10% of the US Top 100 too.
