What if the 7th at SS Blue had been built by Pete Dye?

Ha! Whistling Straits #7 is the closest to Streamsong Blue #7 IMO.

I like Whistling Straits quite a bit and think its a top 50 USA course. It might be in Pete's top five for me, but it would be #5 because Sawgrass and Blackwolf are #3/4. I'm still missing a few as well. Its a bit overdone, but there's still a lot to like.

Andy:

You would devote 10% of the US TOP 50 to Pete Dye?  That's pretty strong stuff...can't say I agree.

 8) this picture doesn't do it well but some might get the picture.. #14 at Waterwood National, affectionately call the Cliffs, ... built in 1975, nice poster child for changing world of Dye's Greatest Eclectic 18

I would give Pete five in the top fifty and four in the top 30! (PDGC, The Golf Club, Sawgrass, Blackwolf, Straits). And Kiawah would likely give him at least a shot at another course I would place highly. The Honors is right behind Whistling Straits, so I could even go one more.

Pete's stuff often isn't natural, but I'm not that interested in the trend of "fitting into the surrounding environment" and natural look and all that. Pete does a tremendous job of creating courses that keep my interest on every shot, but are still reasonably playable from the right tees for a decent golfer. Other than #17 at Sawgrass, there is always an option to miss, but the recovery will be challenging. At the same time, the bold play if well executed is generally rewarded, with the wrong miss punished severely. I think its fascinating.

With the seven courses listed above, plus Oak Tree, Long Cove, and Crooked Stick, I think there's a case that Pete deserves 10% of the US Top 100 too.

Just a random thought, but if there are now houses on the Teeth runway I sure hope someone updated the maps. Those big jets were fun to watch land.

Andy, Golf Magazine pretty much agrees with you.  By my count, Pete has 4 of their top 50 U.S. courses, and 8 of their top 100.

Played three of 'em.  Gotta be Mountain course at La Quinta.

The peanut gallery weighs in.

John,
I'm interested to see La Quinta Mountain and PGA West Stadium next month. Having played a lot of Dye courses and a lot of desert courses, putting them together should be interesting.

Jim,
I expect I'm over the consensus, but most of the courses I mentioned are regulars on the lists. Long Cove and Oak Tree seem to have fallen off in recent years, but Oak Tree has the scores to be Top 100 from Digest, just not the minimum number of ballots. I expect there's a strong chance it shows up in 2015. Crooked Stick, Long Cove, and also Harbour Town are right on the cut I think.

Andy...I'd say the bulk of Mr. Dye's stuff is akin to a modern day Raynor.  Thoughts?

Mac,
I think its fair to say that my quote could also fit Raynor's work, but I'm not sure that the overall bodies of work are really that similar. Dye has seemingly always designed with the professional game in mind and really likes visual deception. Raynor's courses can almost be comforting at times in the sense that the templates are usually familiar. Dye uses a lot of water, which is somewhat of a modern trend anyway. Similarities and differences I guess, but I wouldn't call Dye a modern day Raynor. Both are pretty unique.

The Moorings is an example of fitting into the great natural opportunities for old-timers loving golf without too many demands on excellence.

Thank you Pete and Alice for what we have!

I would have to vote for Pete Dye Golf Club.  But considering that I grew up 5 minutes from there and started working there when I was 14 that may be a biased answer.
