Fairly interesting list until you get to Wentworth.

Wentworth?

That clubhouse looks like a cheesy, low rent amusement park mockup of an English castle made of plaster and plastic.

Notice how many of the great clubhouses - 8 of 12 in this feature - don't feature any elaborate formal landscaping.

I love this feature, San Francisco's clubhouse is another great example too.

Winged Foot is an obvious selection for me but a lesser known gem is the clubhouse of Old Oaks CC in Purchase, formerly known as Hill Crest, which was the estate hub of Trenor Luther Park, built in the late 1880s.

Though impressive enough, this photo doesn't entirely capture the scope and command of the property this structure holds...there is a terraced plaza in the rear going down to the Olympic pool (where scenes from two different movies have been shot), 14 guest rooms on the upper floors, magnificent dark oak grill and more interest and amenities than I can describe here.

The course to which this beauty belongs is also a rather unheralded Tillinghast (although I'm pretty sure Alison was involved at any early stage) and along with Century, hosts the US Open sectional every few years, including the upcoming 2013 edition.

cheers

I'm guessing New Zealand isn't in the book? An English gem.

does anyone else find these massive clubhouses all a bit...well, massive?

why are they so big, and seemingly so outside the 'scale' of the golf holes?

does anyone prefer this grandiose style over a more meaningful and appropriate sized members and guests accomodations?

Of the legendary golf clubhouses, and just from the pictures, but CPC, PVGC and ANGC seem to be able to incorporate double story members club house that dont seem to be more important than the golf courses themselves.

Brett - very true but the clubs you list are golfing clubs whereas Inverness & the likes of Olympia Fields are country clubs and this have far bigger clubhouses.

Brett - The clubhouse at Tobacco Road is surprising subtle and low key, considering the golf course that it belongs to! I think its actually really well done.

Stanford White's work at Palmetto should certainly be in the book.

Also if you like big, flashy modern buildings that are meant to feel old... Queenwood and Friars Head are leaders in this clubhouse ;)

There are so many great ones in NYC Metro, plenty of obvious choices, hope they include Bethpage, it has a legendary parking lot.

Dannebrog Country Club, Dannebrog, Nebraska

The clubhouse is the building on the left. Signature hole #3 (pictured in the foreground), par-3 plays into the silo.
