Has Baltusrol Upper ever been ranked better than the Lower in any magazine?

PatC and DSchmidt,

I think it's worth pointing out that our policy is to encourage attendance at one rater event every other year, not to require it. To that end we always include educational workshops on ratings, often with me doing a presentation, or we bring in a guest speaker (over the years - Pete Dye, Herb Kohler, Rees Jones, Bill Coore, Tom Doak, Mike Keiser, David Kidd, John Fought, Tom Marzolf, Tom Fazio, Tim Liddy, Jeff Brauer, RTJ2, Paul Albanese, Robin Nelson, among others). Nobody has ever been told they have to attend a rater event and no one has ever been tossed for not.

As for the $250 fee, which about 2/3rds of our raters pay, it includes an annual subscription to Golfweek, some apparel, plus a $200 credit toward any one rater event for the year. So all of the numbers about revenue generation being fabricated (as usual) on this and other threads are nonsense.

The big mover seems to be CC of Scranton, moving up from #198 in 2012 to #92 after work completed by Tom Marzolf!!
Is he still working for Fazio, or is he on his own?
Did the club continue to pursue the restorative route they started under Ian Andrew, or have they chosen a new path?

Great to see Austin Golf Club up there. Great to see Whispering Pines up there, it keeps moving on up.

Tyler:

I think that CC of Scranton is now more appropriately ranked but I shudder to think that it is the result of Tom Marzolf.  For me the course has always been on the cusp of top 100 classic. It was improved by Ian Andrews who worked their recently. He removed trees, improved drainage and grassing lines. When it was time to redo the bunkers the membership decided to eschew Ian's plan to restore them in Travis' style and instead opted for the flashed sand faces they saw at Saucon Valley where Marzolf had worked. The bunker work at Scranton is complete and while not authentic is certainly tolerable. Unfortunately, Marzolf also chose to build mounds near several of the greens. These are not only unauthentic but offensive. I was also surprised to see Marzolf given architectural credit on the GW list for Scranton. Few restorers/renovators on the list are credited and team Fazio/Marzolf is not listed for Riviera where the work was much more extensive than it was at Scranton.

A few questions:

 - is it a $200 credit per year?
 - is it use or lose it for that calendar year?
 - when the credit is used, does that money then go to host club/resort?

Also, isn't there some sort of point system for visiting priority courses and attending rater functions? Could you get booted for not having enough points?

It would seem that the rater fee provides a very strong incentive to either see a lot of courses (to get some bang for the buck) and/or take advantage of the rater retreats (to use the credit), both of which should be a benefit to the Golfweek ratings in general. A win-win.

I, for one like ratings. Even if I don't always agree with them it stimulates interest in courses I do not know that much about. I am glad that Golf Week has their ratings, because having 400 courses rated is very appealing and interesting to me. I don't really have a problem with the way they come up with the list. I don't have to agree with it.

Maybe the smores at rater camp cost a lot to make?

The $300,000 is just from the dues payed by raters. I forgot about the other $500,000 cleared from the camps. My mistake.

John, it's $250 per rater/year now.  At 800 raters (which they certainly don't have because quite a few long time raters dropped this year, rather than pay), that's $200K.  $200 of that is a credit toward rater camp.  You also get your Golfweek sent to you and you get a free rater shirt.  I'm not smart enough to figure out the true extent of the margins on the camps because to do that, you'd have to determine the group rate discount they get, and that takes too much time and effort to be worth it.

I'm cracking up picturing all the "campsters" wearing their rater shirts at rater camp.  That's just too funny...

Mark Pritchett,

Last year it took me a few weeks; this time I spent my non-existent winter break getting everything ready in advance. The Next 100-Classic and Next-100 Modern are both now posted.

That's the thing. You don't have to believe it. No one has to believe it. [I know that you know this, Jud. I just liked typing it.]
