Gentlemen,

Joe Bausch and I will be enjoying the newly restored Philadelphia Cricket St Martins 9 the morning of Sunday, March 10.
As an 18 hole course, it hosted the 1907 and 1910 US Opens. With the restoration, with substantial guidance by Keith Foster, it will host the 2013 National Hickory Championship .

Long range forecast calls for temperatures in the low 50's.

Shoot me a note or an email of you'd like to join us.

Cheers,

Powell

Follow the link for a photo tour of the restoration last autumn.

So far we have 6 folks golfing. There's room for plenty more.

Wish I could be there. Haven't come across a better group of blokes than the PA crew at Lancaster (and McGillan's) last August. Plus, the Schmitter looks good!

Dear Powell,

Mmmmm, Schmitter.

P.S. I'd kill everyone on this discussion board for one more sweet drop of Duff's beer.  ;)

Malcolm,

That's wonderful. The winter work at the course was completed a couple of weeks ago and looks great. Our Director of Grounds even posted a video describing it http://youtu.be/Ljh6S3diJ9M

We plan to tee off at 9:50. Check your IM for more details.

Best,

Powell

Would like to join you as well at St Martins. The little course, not the church in the Field!!  I played the course around 20 years ago, and have looked out at it many times after parking for squash tournaments at PCC with my son.

Will come down with Malcolm M.  We are the boys from Springdale G C , the Flynn course in Princeton, NJ.  Hopefully there is room for me as well.

Thank you for arranging this.

Bill

Just wanted to give well-deserved thanks to Powell Arms for hosting a delightful late Winter/early Spring gathering of GCA faithful at charming Philly Cricket! The Philly and beyond crew that made the trek enjoyed the sporty original nine and a tasty clubhouse lunch, followed by another go there for some. The Q&A session and other probing banter among the group made for yet another unique get together of golf folk that one just doesn't get the pleasure to experience that often. Cheers Powell...well done.

Warm regards,

"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak

I'd never played St. Martins until yesterday so I don't have a reference point for all the changes, but Dan M and his crew sure have a fun 9-hole layout.

I'll present pictures of a few features that stood out to my eyes (all photos are 'clickable').

The green on the uphill par 4 1st hole is really neat, very geometric (rectangular) and deep, the back built up I'm guessing maybe 6':

The 3rd green has a false front and is really sloped on the left side.

Approach view:

From over the green:

The 4th hole, a par 4 (289 yards) might tempt the bigger hitter, but there is a significant fall-off left of the fw as the hole starts to bend to the right:

The 5th is a short par 3 across a depression:

The 6th with the uphill approach shot (Mike Cirba used his 40 year old 4-wood and 5-iron to birdie the hole!):

The green on the 8th hole is another of the type I've not really seen quite like before:

The 9th green has another very geometric green, this one very squarish, with a false front.  My second shot from this view with a sand wedge hit about 6' past the pin (a middle pin!) and spun back all the way off the green (d'oh!):

View from over the green:

It must be a riot to play St. Martin's with one of the sets of hickories on site.

I have about 40 pictures total in the St. Martins photo album, which is available here:

http://xchem.villanova.edu/~bausch/images/albums/PCCSM/

Big ups to Powell for the invite and ordering up a nice day with chamber of commerce early spring-like weather!

Thanks to everyone for coming out. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to show off this "labor of love" by our grounds crew. Can't wait to see the zoysia fairways green-up.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

Powell,

I am a big fan of the (new?) wooden rakes and pins at the St. Martins course - a subtle reminder we were playing on hallowed ground.

I think you have the perfect course for packing up the sunday bag and fine-tuning your game without having to worry about making a tee time, taking a caddie in the a.m., etc. The irrigation, new sod and other restorations will certainly pay off in the summertime.

Yes, the rakes, flagstcks and flags are new.  They replaced their modern equivalents last season.

Powell,

Thanks so much and a congrats to everyone involved.

Mark S in our group noticed a couple of similarities to another Willie Tucker course in NJ that he is familiar with.
Squarish shaped fronts of the greens and the blending of the fairways into the greens.

I had a lot of fun putting.

Zoysia fairways a rare choice in this area, what is the thought.  It would seem like the ball should sit up nicely on this place to learn the game.
