Tom,

In the UK this isn't relevant in winter with short courses and temporary tees and greens.

In the main season however, I try to play from the competition tees whenever I'm allowed. At courses I go to this is mostly in the 6,100-6,500 range although I'm happier to go longer.

Most courses in the UK seem reluctant to allow casual golf from the competition tees, my home club is like this. Also, most UK courses don't like visitors using the competition tees. Some more enlightened courses take the opposite view however, which is nice, but tend to link it to a handicap limitation of some kind, which is I guess a bit more understandable when you take wear patterns, variable playing ability, speed of play etc into account.

As an aside, although I wouldn't necessarily be in favour of such a development, I can't help but wonder if we'll still be playing from grass tees at all in 10-20 yrs time or will it be synthetic tees pretty much everywhere by then?

Hope the survey goes well.

All the best.

Redstone Golf Club, Humble, TX - Gold Tees (1 up from back) 7069 (my home club).

Shadowhawk Golf Club, Richmond, TX - Black Tees (tips) 7207 -- a bit long for my tastes.

I generally look for something between 6800 and 7000.

Last round was at my home course, Cypress Lakes. It's the windiest spot in Houston that isn't down towards the coast. The back tees are a little over 7,000 and the next tees are about 6500 or 6600, I usually play a mix of tees since it's always blowing. The other day the wind was blowing about 25 sustained, with greens rolling 12 things were a little tough. It was dead that day so I even made some new back tees on some of the downwind holes.

1.   Windsong - about 6700.  It can stretch to 7500 yards but those tees are not used much, even by the good players other than tournament.  Nonetheless there are some advantages to having the length available.  The extra length allows more variety in day to day setup.  We can host college and state tournaments without altering the course setup.  It is nice to have the option of going back available - which is something I expect to do once ayear.

2.   Cabo del Sol Ocean - i think we played from about 6400 or 6800 yards depending on the group.

Either I need to check my records or you owe me some $$$.  ;)

Wherever I play these days I try to play from 6700-6900 and will not heitate to mix and match with tee selection. Another reason I love the concept of no tee markers, just yardage plates. I will play a half of my dozen or so annual rounds next week with the owner of Pumpkin Ridge and another esteemed guest. All of us mix tees and try to make every hole as enjoyable for our game as possible. This includes a Top 100 panelist playing off the red tees here and there.

1. Pelican Hills (South) - 5,930 yds. white tees (in a Scramble... does that count?)
Rustic Canyon - 6,630 yds. blue tees

2. The Olympic Club (Lake) - Blue tees - 6,500 yds i think?
Aronimink GC - White tees - 6,500 yds i think?

6,400 - 6,700 yds is comfortable, and i really think, for me, it comes down to the par 3's... if they're all 190+ yds and the shortest is like 150 than that's too long.

Played LACC once from the "plates" which were well north of 7,000 yds... #11 par-3 played 280...  Way too much golf course for me.

My last round was a few weeks ago, played Whisper Rock Lower course at 7,035 yds.

My home club is Tavistock CC and I play the back tees at 6,823 yds.

I would guess that 60-70% of my rounds during the year are competitive rounds and the large majority are played from the back tees of wherever we're playing. I'd guess that I play 90% of my casual rounds from the back tees as well.

Jamie,

We have never met, but share a mutual friend in Ian Dalzell.  I understand you are a very good competitive player.  Not sure if length is one of the strengths of your game, but I am interested in your opinion.  Are the 90% of your casual rounds played from the back tees because of the guys you are playing with or where you would choose to play from?

Thanks,

Mike

Very cool. Ian is one of my favorite people!

I play the back tees mostly because of both reasons.  I'd prefer it and a lot of the guys I generally play with do as well.  If I have guests that can't handle the distance, I'll always move up a tee to play where they play from.  I never play the tips by myself if my group is playing regular tees.

Southern Highlands, Las Vegas:  Blue tees, about 7000 yards
Olympic, Ocean: Blue tees, about 6400 yards

Personally, I always find the difference between Vegas and coastal venues to be about a club.  However, the difference between Vegas and mountain golf is much less.  Lack of humidity here plus elevation of about 2400 ft makes a big difference.

Played Home course last - Springdale Golf Club, Princeton, NJ @ 6,380 yards.

We have one new tee that tips it to 6,400.  I can reach all par fours with no longer than a 6/7 iron unless I hit a poor tee shot.  Hardest shots are par threes at 194, 182, and 184 (uphill), where I am hitting 5 iron or 23 hybrid.

I enjoy playing Chechessee Creek at 6,606 yards Champ. Tees and it seems longer than that. There are about four holes where it really seems longer/harder than the back tees at 6,285.  Will be there two weeks from tomorrow!!

Enjoy the challenge of courses 6,800 and longer if the wind is not severe.  Since I seem to play alot of older courses, many are not really than long.

Last rounds were at Streamsong; same tees as Tom.  At home, most rounds from members tees, approx 6600, some tourneys from back tees, 7000 both par 71.  I usually play from where my fellow competitors are playing except when some of the fellows at the club move up to senior tees; I'm not quite ready for that.

Torrey Pines North:  I had the choice of playing the blues at 6600 with a young guy who looked like he could play or the whites at 6325 with 2 retirees from Az. I picked the blues which was a wise decision socially, but a poor choice for my game.

After a 5 year wait I finally got into the Mens Club at Coronado. Thank God we play all our events from the whites at 6276, versus the blues at 6590.

Last round and home course the same:

Western Hills Country Club, Cincinnati, OH. Yardage about 6,500.

That's the yardage the course tips out at. My ideal yardage to play is between 6,900 and 7,000, but I always tee it up where my playing partners want to play.

Last round was at my home course (Camden Country Club, par 70), tees were a blend of member and senior tees which total 5734 yards.  When it warms up and the course isn't a wet slog, I'll move to  the member tees at 6008.

Monday I'm playing in a SCGA 40+ tournament at the Greenville Country Club Riverside course which will be set up around 6300 to 6400.

Jamey, please provide a review of the Riverside Course.

1. Southview CC - St. Paul, MN - approx 6100 yards
2. I don't have a home course, but would say 6600-6800 is typical.  I like to get rounds in the 7100+ range where I can, just to mix up the variety. But Royal County Down is probably the only course I have played at 7,000+ that is actually in my favorite 15-20 courses.

Broadway at 5900ish yards

Burnham & Berrow at 6400ish yards

Ciao

Ace

I don't know, but I would be surprised if it was more than £850 year.

Thomas

We play qualifiers straight through the year at Burnham and the tees are never put forward in winter.  I reckon the daily tees play more like 6700ish and sometimes more in the winter.  For a few weeks now I haven't been able to reach several par 4s in regulation.  Its tough to keep a handicap in winter play which is when I play most of my qualifiers.
