1.  My last round also happened to be at my home course [in early December  :'(], and we played from the tips, which are 6835 (par 70; 73.9; 138).

2.  I play the majority of my rounds (probably 70%) from what we call the "Combo" tees, which are a mix of tips (usually on the shorter holes) and the next tees up.  The yardage for those tees is 6633 (par 70; 73.3; 135).  The remaining 30% of my rounds at my home course are pretty evenly divided between the tips (described above) and the standard tees of 6236 yards (par 70; 70.9; 132).  The standard tees are the ones we use for member-guests, member-members, etc.

1.   Windsong - about 6700.  It can stretch to 7500 yards but those tees are not used much, even by the good players other than tournament.  Nonetheless there are some advantages to having the length available.  The extra length allows more variety in day to day setup.  We can host college and state tournaments without altering the course setup.  It is nice to have the option of going back available - which is something I expect to do once ayear.

2.   Cabo del Sol Ocean - i think we played from about 6400 or 6800 yards depending on the group.

Last round: My last round was (this is depressing to say) last November at Bellerive CC in St. Louis. Playing with my father-in-law I don't think I played it longer than 6200 yards.

Home Course: Town & Country Club, St. Paul. The course tips out around 6400 yards with a par of 72, and that's where I generally like playing from. The next set up is around 6100 which is where the majority of the play is from because the 6400 yard tees are too difficult for most players. Last fall, the club co-hosted the State Mid-Am (over 30's w/ sub 6.0 indexes) and the average score for both days was way over 80.

Last round was at my home course (Camden Country Club, par 70), tees were a blend of member and senior tees which total 5734 yards.  When it warms up and the course isn't a wet slog, I'll move to  the member tees at 6008.

Monday I'm playing in a SCGA 40+ tournament at the Greenville Country Club Riverside course which will be set up around 6300 to 6400.

If playing a course we are unfamiliar with, my golfing crew will typically opt for whatever amounts to about 6500 yds.

We'll play the Bandon courses at a greater distance because the firm turf and strong winds help mitigate the extra yardage.

What really penalizes me with a longer course are numerous 200+ yd par 3s.  Just eats me up.

At my home club, I play approx. 2/3 of rounds from blue tees at 6474, and 1/3 from blacks at 6728.
When playing away from home, I look to play from tees in the 6600-6900 range.

My last round was a few weeks ago, played Whisper Rock Lower course at 7,035 yds.

My home club is Tavistock CC and I play the back tees at 6,823 yds.

I would guess that 60-70% of my rounds during the year are competitive rounds and the large majority are played from the back tees of wherever we're playing. I'd guess that I play 90% of my casual rounds from the back tees as well.

1. Streamsong Blue: Green Tees; 7176

2. Canterbury Golf Club: Black Tees; 7012

First guy out of 44 respondents thus far who regularly plays from 7000+....

I saw that too.  Interesting and kind of surprising to be honest.
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

1. Rockrimmon CC., Stamford, CT. - 6608 (whites)

2. Richter Park, Danbury, CT. - 6350 (whites)

BM, JT and all,
I'm not nearly as surprised. I don't know if Tom put this survey out before or after my late-night semi-rant on the Nicklaus-Feherty thread, but I suspect the 7000 players will prove four times as rare as 1/44.  And look at how many are in the sub-6500 range.

cheers

Jamie,

We have never met, but share a mutual friend in Ian Dalzell.  I understand you are a very good competitive player.  Not sure if length is one of the strengths of your game, but I am interested in your opinion.  Are the 90% of your casual rounds played from the back tees because of the guys you are playing with or where you would choose to play from?

Thanks,

Mike

Southampton   Blues 6300         30% of rounds
Goat Hill 5200                           30%
The Bridge 6900/7400 or mix      25%
Palmetto 6400                          5%
Competitive events  6700 avg     10%

Played SS all the way back except event where we played Blues on Blue
Mix would suit me there

1.  Glenmore, VA  Around 6800
2.  Bent Creek, MN  6500,   but it probably plays around 6700-6800 since I can go a round without hitting a driver.

i think we have a tendancy to look too much at total yardage and not even at clubs hit into green.    I've played courses that at 6900+ where I am I hitting 9iron or less into par 3s  and played 6500 yard courses where I am routinely hitting 5s and 6s into par 4.

Jud, great point!  I'm amazed...I guess not by seeing that people find it more enjoyable to play something close to 6,500 yards, but that the "market" choice is to insist on courses much longer.

I live in Orlando, so most courses have opened after 1980, or even 1990.  It is customary to be 7,000 or even 7,300 from the back set.  This means Par 4s all over 400 and Par 3s all over 200.   The problem for me is that moving up two sets of tees on these holes usually takes some of the interest away from the holes.  Blame less-than-great design if you will.

I'm not for ignoring the elite players at all, but you'd think more courses would say they aren't worried about holding a college event and targeting the largest part of the market.

Pat Craig,

I figured your home course: Town & Country Club, St. Paul was easy considering you broke 80 every round but one in the fall of last year.  That is some great playing that must have really impressed the boys at Golf Digest.  Congrats!!!

As I have gotten older my distance off the tee has dropped substantially. I personally instituted my own "Tee it Forward" policy years ago. When I was younger I targeted yardages in the 6,800 to 7,000 range. Later that was reduced to 6,600 to 6,800 yards. I am now most comfortable playing between 6,300 to 6,600 yards. I have found that I enjoy the game much more when I can reach all the par 4 holes in two and actually have an outside chance of reaching a par 5 in two.

For crying out loud, put personal pride aside and enjoy the game! I know I do.
