My favorite yardage is 6600 - 6800.

Oakbourne CC - 1955 Dick Wilson  - I switch between the 2 back tees at my home club depending on who I am playing with, but maxed out is still shorter then 7000.  I average 6700 on my home course.

I am a 4 handicap.

The last course I played was New South Wales GC.  A mix of member and back tees around 6750 yards.

The course I play the most is 6600+ yards from the back tees.

Depending on who I'm playing with on the road and if it's not at elevation, I'll play the member tees or up to 7,100 yards.

I think NSWGC tops out at just shy of 6800, so you can't have played too many up....

Home courses - 4.6 handicap:

West(Par 73): Regular game at 6,480 with a good number of rounds at 6,860
East(Par 71): 6,363 with occaisional rounds at 7,115
Links(Par 72): 6,621 with occaisional rounds at 6,101 (7,009 tees are available but I rarely play them)

All things being equal, I think the 6,300-6,600 is a nice range for fun and challenging golf. I would prefer more strategic and tactical challenge within that yardage range as opposed to more length.

1) Northumberland GC Winter Course - 6160 yards (Par 70)
2) Northumberland GC Summer Course usually white tees - 6687 yards par 72
2)(a) Elie - 6273 (par 70) off the whites
2)(b)(i) Crail Balcomie - mostly whites 5861 (par 69)
2)(b)(ii) Crail Craighead - roughly even split between whites 6722 and yellows 6221 both par 72

If I'm visiting a course and have a choice of tees I'll look for a set between 6500 and 6800.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Most recent round:  Streamsong Red - Black / 6,584 & Streamsong Blue - Black / 6,698

Home course:  Brookside (Columbus) - Blue / 6,644

Typically seems I end up 1 up from the tips...6,800 is about max for fun round, so 7,000+ usually a bit of a task (too many long-irons and hybrids into par 4's).
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda...

Huntington CC...6,450

My index of 8.2 makes these distances fun, but a 2.0 is going to complain they are too short I am afraid...RHE

My last round was around 6600 at Metairie CC.

I play my home course at about 6600 as well.

Anything between 6500 and 7000 is usually fine with me, and I like to play around 6700-6800.

Play most of my golf at Wolf Point and even though we move the tees around a lot, we usually end up somewhere from 6400-6600. I play with some guys who hit the ball a mile like my assistant Robert and my son Ryan, and even at those lengths, the course has plenty of length because of the mix of long holes. I have played those tees with a very good player who has played in 5 US Opens and he had a blast and stops by every time he is passing through. No one has ever complained the course plays too short.

I think the fascination with length gets muted a bit when the short shots are challenging and interesting.

Last round was at home, Pensacola CC, from the white tees I have played the past few years, 6200 yards.  I moved up from the blues at 6500 yards. Our black tees are 6900.

Don,

At my home course, the 2 shortest Par 4s on the course gives me the most fits.  We hold an annual College Tournament and Hole 12 (Par 4, 328 Yards) always plays the most over par.

My most recent round was at Moliets at 6,874 yards

My home club is Domaine Imperial and I usually play it around 6,800-6,900 yards

These distances are fine for my game.  My handicap is currently 8

My most recent round was at a course called 500 Club. I played their back set of tees, which still only measure 6860 (and on that day weren't playing nearly that long, though I didn't know it when I teed off).

I don't have an official home course, but the closest thing would probably be the Faldo course at Wildfire, where I most often play the back tees that stretch to 6840.

Generally 6800 is a yardage I'm pretty comfortable with. Anything shorter can be a bit awkward. I can play from lobger, but I rarely choose to of my own volition--it's a lot more pleasant to be around 6800.

I am 65 and carry a 6.2 index.  I generally play from around 6600 yards.
Member clubs
Four Streams:  play from either the 6700 yard tees or the 6400. It depends on with whom I play.
Ballyhack.  I jump around but probably about 6500 yards.
Musgrove Mill 6400 yards
Country Club at Woodmore  6700 yards

Depending on firmness, which is hard to find most days, these days, I enjoy golf so much more from 6000 yds.

Streamsong Red, morning of Feb 22, black tees of 6584 yards (71.7, 125), 10-15 mph wind and just at the edge of comfortably long
Streamsong Blue, afternoon of Feb 22, black tees of 6698 yards ( 72.0, 127) no wind.  Well inside comfortably long

Home course:
Philadelphia Cricket Club, Wissahickon course, typical member yellow tees are the 2nd longest, 6354 yards (71.6, 134), longest black tees are 6867 yards (73.9, 142).  I estimate 70% of the mens rounds are from the yellow and 15% are from the black.
Philadelphia Cricket Club, Militia Hill course, typical member silver tees are the 3rd longest, 6636 yards (71.9, 131), longer black tees are 7080 yards (74.3, 135), one shorter yellow tees preferred by seniors are 6147 yards (71.9, 131). I would estimate 70% are from the silver, 10% from black and 20% yellow.

As a side note, I'm surprised by the relatively low slopes of the Streamsong courses.

For me:

1.  Streamsong (Blue), 6698 yards.  Played with three lefties in a 4some for the first time.

2.  Dismal River (Doak)  guessing 6,719.97 yards.  With the dogs.

CJ,

That must've been a very strange experience.

  1. Streamsong (Blue), 6698. I would've like to have tried the tips but didn't get the chance.

 2. Ballyneal, ~6600? Whatever one considers the members tees, up on 2, 6, 7 (a little), 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 18.
