Ten years but who is counting?
« on: February 22, 2013, 10:44:40 AM »
On Feb 22, 2003 I officially became a baby member of GCA. In those ten years I have had 3126 posts, begun 260 topics and spent a staggering 24 days, 12 hours and 31 minutes on line.    I am not certain but I don't think I have spent much more time than that preparing sermons.  I contributed one In My Opinion piece on Musgrove Mill GC.

I have learned so much from all of you.  I have not met as many of you as I had hoped but maybe that will change when I retire next year.  It was my privilege to host Mark Rowlinson's son Giles for a week and play golf with both Mark, his sons, and Sean Arble when I was in England for speaking engagements.

I have played with half a dozen or so with you in the sates and it was nice to put a face with the name.  You have always treated me with kindness and grace, even when I showed my ignorance of the topic.  I discovered that sometime we think we understand stuff when we really don't.
In some ways I am a better person because of you and want to thank you for allowing me to be part of your little group of golf nuts.  Whale I was a kid I was going down a bad road.  My Dad bought golf clubs for me and told me to go and play.  The pros at Fort Meade MD, Carl Rasnic, Bill Sporre, and  Lou Graham took me under their wing and straightened me out.  I remember bringing a broken Spaulding 3 1/2 wood into the pro shop. When Mr. Rasnic saw the club he banned me from the course for two weeks.  Dad said I was lucky he would have banned me for a month.  Golf has always been an important part of my life and am honored to share a lot of that with you.
Thank you very much,
Tommy

Congratulations, Tommy, and a date well-picked even if it did baptize you in a way to the world of off-topic threads. Not referring to this fine thread -- every one of your posts carries the bonus opportunity to reflect upon Gandhi's words -- but rather that 33 years ago today, on a Friday as it were...

It is nice to share an anniversary with a miracle. One on ice and one old as arctic ice.

Tommy - good to have you here, a sane voice that reflects always a simple love of the the game. To paraphrase an old line from someone (I've forgotten who, might be dear old Mr. Lewis): if a man truly loves even one thing, for its sake and for the enjoyment it brings him, he's thereby protected from most of the devil's snares. I assume you're doing very well on that count! :)

Peter, I've always said that God doesn't play golf but loves those who do.  So maybe it does save us from the snares of the Devil.

Congrats Tommy!

Besides the Miracle on Ice, you are also sharing your 10th anniversary with a fairly significant Golf one...125 years ago yesterday, John Reid and friends laid out 3 holes on Lake Street and began what would become the first recognized american golf club...St. Andrews in Yonkers, NY.

Here is a little anniversary present for you, and once again, congratulations

cheers,

Now you've done it. I purposely never showed GCA to my esteemed father-in-law, the Rev. Jim Campbell, because then I'd have to clean up my streak of cobalt-blue invective. Huntley insists I remove my hat when I climb into the Treehouse, but since we have been estrogen-free for some years, I've never felt compelled to show my Sunday manners or curb my stream of literary Tourette's.

Now that I know we've got a preacher in the house, I'm going to have to tuck in my Hawaiian shirt, clean up my act and behave for a change. Either that or go sit next to Tommy in Max's Lounge.

Tommy,

Congratulations on the anniversary and upcoming retirement!  I can honestly say I've rarely enjoyed a day as much as the day we had at Musgrove Mill with Mark and Turboe.  Hope you get to spend a lot more time down here in the coming years.

I think the Dixie Cup sounds like a great event.  They still talk about it at Ballyhack.  Not sure about 2013 but 2014 for sure.

I'm sure they talk about us as in, "Wow, those guys were really crazy to be out here in THAT weather!"

Lester warned me about late October in Roanoke, but I honestly had no idea!

The highlight was sitting around the fire pit passing along a bottle of Balvenie Doublewood courtesy of Mike Hamilton!   ;D
