The only problem with the holes that play in between par 3 and par 4 for some golfers is that they need to have a fairway.  I think any hole where more than 10% of the people playing it from a given teebox would be expected to be unable to reach the green need to have a fairway that they can easily hit with a hybrid/fairway wood.  An all or nothing hole like something with a big ravine from tee to green or island green is fine, but you need to put the women and seniors closer to 100 yards than 150 to keep it playable for them.  I pay a lot more attention to this sort of thing since my dad is losing distance so quickly (he's 79 now) that I fully expect him to start hitting the ball for negative yardage if he's still alive and playing in a decade :)
