Who do you love...
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:47:38 AM »
on this site that you have never met or has never set you up to play a course you couldn't access yourself?  It always seems a bit late to talk about those who have passed when there are so many people in our lives that do not know how much we appreciate their small contributions to our lives.

I'm going to go with Michael Moore.  I've never met Michael and doubt that I will ever travel to Maine where he is the main man in public and private access.  He has however alway conducted himself with a certain amount of class and discreet humor so often lacking in my own life.  I like that he is known for wearing slacks and his good friendship with Mike Sweeney.  Michael does occasionally exchange emails with me which always pick me up a bit because I feel smart knowing a guy like him reads my posts.

Thank you, Michael.  I love you.

I walked forty-seven miles of barbed wire,
I got a cobra snake for a necktie
A brand new house on the road side,
And it's a-made out of rattlesnake hide
Got a band new chimney put on top,
And it's a-made out of human skull
Come on take a little walk with me baby,
And tell me who do you love?
 Who do you love?
 Who do you love?

FYI...I tried to whittle this thing down to one answer and I can't do it.  Too much love to go 'round.

I think it would be an interesting social experiment to match up four guys who have never met live - yet tangled in a rancorous dust-up here on GCA - and send them off the tee incognito. Obviously, they would have to consent beforehand not to reveal their identity - and then at the end of the round be asked to guess the name of each poster based on their experience out on the course.

Truth be told, I've never met a single person here who I did not immediately like - even ones who come off online as snarky, smarmy, stupid, crazy or just plain rude. I am also asserting there has often been absolutely no similarity whatsoever between the tone and texture of their posts and the cat wandering down the fairway next to me.

Everyone will immediately name Patrick or Barny as the obvious choices; while Patrick has a forceful intellect in person, he does it was class and panache. Barny is just a nice, soft-spoken guy - despite his best effort to be the spooky, malevolent Kevin Spacey character of our Treehouse.

Which posters you've never met would you want to pair together incognito? My first pick in the category of "One of these things is not like the other" would be J.C. Jones and Hamilton B. Hearst - if he is still lurking somewhere.

I've met Tim Martin, Kevin Lynch, Mark Saltzman, Ian Andrew, that Chris guy that Kevin like to bro-hug, John Lyon, Dave Harshbarger and vouch that each is a joy to meet, golf with and chill with, prepositions excepted.

Like Mac, my sincere reaction is that there is too much potential to single one person out. The guys that participate in the fantasy golf pool are a bunch of swells, so that would be an easy 20 or so to choose from.

Since the point of this thread is to select a name, I won't disappoint. I'll go with Nick Campanelli. Seems like a solid guy with a great wife, knows how to handle snow, has a cool golf blog and lots of vowels.

Should someone nominate me, I'll know for certain that the Bills have won the title and that Satan is lacing up his skates.

Such a bromance forming here, Jim!

Mark Bourgeois, did we play at Rustic a couple years ago? If that wasn't you I apologize, for you would be on this list as well. I'm pretty sure it was you.  :) :-[

Jim Colton
Charlie Goerges
GJ Bailey
Kyle Henderson
Mark Saltzman
Mike Sweeney

The list of people I've met in real life whom I love online as well is too long to post. Looking forward to meeting a few of the guys on this list this year! Luckily there's a huge number of people who aren't on this list above that will be able to fill the void.

Can any other 4some of GCA.com participants verify that Hammy is a live body, or just a nom d'plume for one of our regulars, in need of an annonymous cover to say things they don't want attributed to their own selves?

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Yes, I loved JC Jones once too, but he's too conceited. Everything is about JC, all the time. I think he has psychological issues; he never calls, he never writes anymore. I loved Joe Hancock, but he got up and left me, just like that without saying a word - a rambling man, I guess. I have a long distance romance with Colin Macqueen -- the distance makes it safer, though it sometimes feels like I'm kidding myself, like there's nothing real there at all. It's the same with Sean Arble -- sure, everything is great when you don't actually have to live together.  Paul Cowley is nice, but he scares me a bit -- some wild ideas and out of the box thinking. (I think when he was younger he may have smoked some marijuana.) Mike Sweeney is married, and so is Mark Bourgeois -- they don't have the time, that's all, you know, what with kids and all, their businesses etc. Pat Mucci is too rich, plain and simple -- things wouldn't work at all, practically speaking, as he'd invite me to what for him is an inexpensive restaurant but that would deplete my life's savings just for the appetizer. I think I have to keep loving him from afar. I think I would love Mac Plumart and Eric Smith, but they almost seem too nice for me, too good -- I'm afraid they'd reject me out of hand, the first time I swore or threw a golf club. Ah, well, that's okay. I've learned to be happy alone; I like myself. And plus, I'd bet Ian Andrew would return my love, as long as I looked up at him adoringly and nodded in agreement at everything he says.

I always thought Rich Goodale was someone I wanted to meet based on the intelligence and humour in his posts (despite recent differences in opinion regarding TOC changes)... I'd like to meet Peter Pallotta to talk about theatre, prose and music based on some of his past posts on those subjects... but I'd be secretly hoping he doesn't philosophise in person quite as much as he does on here because I wouldn't be able to keep up.... And I reckon Pat Mucci would be a different proposition in the real world

Pietro; you are taking this towards an entirely theatrical direction, which I find positively enchanting, in a platonic sort of way.  Always with the 'anima e core' that irrepressible Italo-Canuck he is...  ::) ;D :o 8) 8)

I'll go with the Gomer Pyle sort of characterization of the GCA.com bromances rather than single out the many appealing personalities we enjoy here.  " I like'ya, but I don't luv'ya. "

RJ - thanks, and very glad you got it in the spirit it was intended!  :D

And thanks too for a lovely bit of Beniamino Gigli -- a friend of mine who's a professional singer thinks him his favourite (and best) tenor. I also have a soft spot for him (besides the music) because we named our little boy Beniamino, the 'son of my right hand'. (Lots of great Bens from the past: Ben Hogan, Benny Goodman, Ben Gazzara etc)

I love Gib's idea of setting up foursomes of random GCA'ers who've never met.

I'd like to see...

Bart Bradley, Keith O'halloran, Mark Saltzman, and Wade Schueneman tee it up for their first round at Dismal Doak.  (I don't think they've met).

Edit...I'll offer that I'd like to tee it up with Sean Leary, Jud T., Peter P., and at Highlands Links (assuming no one has ever played there before).

Last week at the Ren Cup I checked into the Lakeland Hilton Garden Inn about 9pm.

I noticed a group of about 25 men at the bar and just sensed they were there for the Ren Cup.   Taking a close look I spotted Ian Andrew and went over to introduce myself.   At that point the flood gates opened and there was Eric Smith, Ben Cowen-Dewar, Chris Johnston, Mike Young, his son and too many others to mention.  I had not met any of these yet we all had a great time.  This game of golf is so great in that it takes you to these amazing places all over the world with people who you share a similar interest.

Jim Colton, thanks for the love.   Lets meet in the fall.  I plan to go to Ballyneal and then up to Dismal.

Man, this is one weird thread.

That being said, I'd love to play with Bart, Wade and Keith at Dismal Doak, or anywhere else for that matter.  Unfortunately, I've met Keith twice and played with him once, so he's out of the group.

I think the better question for the thread is 'with whom have you actively avoided playing golf?'  Messers Becker, Csigo and McKeever are at the top of that list.  Looking to avoid them through 2013.

BEN SIMS! Did Tuco fail to leave an impression??? On the deck, Friars Head after the Naccarato Shin Dig a few years ago, you know the one where Tommy personally hugged every invitee and cried tears of joy.... Im now pillaging the Golden State in the East Bay although I refuse (as a NY Jet Fan, a delicious double entendre considering you are a fly boy) to support the Raiders although I like their ethos..

For me:  I finally met Ted Sturges at Streamsong and like compadres at rehab, we've both had to suffer Ran Morrissett invading our golf swings and as an emotional vampire. ;D... So Ted is off the list!
