Bay Area suggestions
« on: February 07, 2013, 01:46:53 AM »
Going down to play some golf with my dad February 23-26. Most likely playing Monday the 25th at the Cal Club. I am looking to play 36 on Sunday the 24th. I was thinking Cinnabar Hills in south San Jose then staying close so traffic won't be to bad. What other suggestions do you have. We would definitely like to play all day and I can't think of to many other places that would lend itself to that. We could also do north bay as we are coming from Stockton. Any help would be appreciated. This is not a cry for access. I am a PGA member and my dad belongs to Stockton Golf  and CC. Thanks

Lance,
If you can get on try to play Meadow Club, although I don't know if it would lend itself to all-day play. Near San Jose, you could easily get down to Pasatiempo, it's a pretty short drive from San Jose and it shouldn't be too hard to play all day. If that's too far, Harding isn't too bad either, although I feel like they could've done better on the renovation

Pasatiempo is definitely the best course in the San Jose area. I've played San Juan Oaks just south of Gilroy and it's a very good track. The back nine gets into some nice land. Designed by Gene Bates and Fred Couples.

There was a thread on SF Bay Area golf here maybe 5-7 days ago. If you scroll back you should be able to find it.

Found it!

Cordevalle is another South Bay option, albeit a pricey one.

Thanks Dave, I know I read that thread and it must of slipped my mind. I'm thinking cinnabar hills 36 is probably the best option. Tho Wente Vineyards does intrigue me with some positive reviews from the treehouse. Thanks guys

So where is the best place to get a steak in San Francisco?  Thanks...

San Francisco is not a great place for steak. Most of the best cuts of beef do not get to the West Coast.

Harris' on Van Ness and Alfred's are the two "old-school" steakhouses here. Original Joe's is another good choice.

David, I thought I heard that Original Joe's down in the Tenderloin had closed.   Joe's Special after a long evening of carousing was always a treat!   (It's a fritata with onions, spinach and ground chuck, tasty!)

Yes, Original Joe's lost their Tenderloin location in a fire several years ago (and I was planning to go there the day after the fire!). The restaurant did not operate for 12-24 months.

Original Joe's re-opened in the Fior d'Italia location on Washington Square 12-18 months ago. It is a little more upscale than it used to be.

FYI, Fior d'Italia moved to a different location towards Bay Steet, but I think it is now out of business.

agree, skip the steak option (although one can find a decent one) here in SF... go to Chicago or KC for that.  But if you're wanting for food options in SF... then we have other problems. ;)

On the golf front, it was mentioned in a recent, similar thread that Presidio GC might be worth checking out.  I was out there last week hitting balls w/ my son, and from what i can see the work they're doing there is pretty interesting.  There are some really good holes there, and some clunkers, but all in all a fun place to play smack-dab in the city.

And again, it's worth repeating... Mira Vista in Berkely/El Cerrito is worth seeing/playing.  TPC Stonebrae is fun too.

If your coming from Stockton, you might consider Wente Vineyards Golf Course in Livermore which is right on the way to San Jose:

http://www.wentevineyards.com/golf/

and Poppy Ridge which is right next door to Wente:

http://www.poppyridgegolf.com/

not classic courses but definitely worth playing.

Another option from Stockton is the Antioch area with Roddy Ranch:

http://www.roddyranch.com/

and its neighbors Deer Ridge and Shadow Lakes:

http://golfinbrentwood.com/golf/proto/golfinbrentwood/

In San Jose you might consider Boulder Ridge CC a private that is really fun:

and don't forget Pasatiempo is right over the hill from San Jose!
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

If you are a prime rib guy, House of Prime Rib in the City is always a good choice.

Thanks fellas, I didn't mean to hijack this thread but my nephew is out there and I promised him a big steak.  Will now look into other options!

You can start your SF restaurant research here:

P.S. It's not like the steaks here are bad! ;)

In in the interest of full disclosure, I am not a steak aficionado. It is not the culinary or cultural focal point of San Francisco and the Peninsula - too many health clubs and joggers. That stated, the only place I know of for a guaranteed excellent steak is Broadway Prime in Burlingame.

Even Barny thought it was a very good; despite what you may think about his obtuse antics, the guy clearly knows his red meat.

With the risk of sounding rude, this topic has been discussed at least 10 times over the years.  Amazing that nobody uses the search feature.

Joel, agreed.  There are plenty of resources on the net to find a good place to chow down.  I can see a thread on best golf clubhouse food open to public in a particular area (if you are going for the grub and not necessarily the architecture)

But say what you will as criticism, I usually find Guy Fieri's program a good place to start when going to an area and searching out and interesting place to eat:

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I contribute therefore I ask.  I received helpful and considerate posts from different people which despite occasional rudeness, is one of the great things about this site.

Thanks Tim. Appreciate the links. Those might be the best options for 36 holes. Trying to cram as much golf in as possible in a short time. What is your choice between roddy ranch and poppy ridge?

Joel, your right I missed the thread and apologize for the near duplicate thread

I would take Wente over Roddy over Poppy. But Poppy does have 27 holes on the property.

Stevenson (sp?) Ranch seems like a no brainer, if you're coming from Stockton. Theres an old Basque restaurant in the nearest town. Quite a different experience.
