There are way too many golf course rankings these days; and, there are some glaring omissions from this list.

I can't comment on Black Bear Ridge, as I haven't played it, but Lookout and Cherry Hill, IMHO, have no place on a top 30 list in Canada either way, as much as I like both places (I especially have a fondness for Lookout).

The list has some head-scratchers, that's for sure but in reality, which list doesn't?  At least they stopped at 30!

Matt, I don't agree that Lookout Point has no place on a Canadian top-30.  I think it could be among the top-30 courses in the country and is certainly in the top-50.  It is clearly better than several of the courses listed.

If anyone's interested, and there is no reason they should be, I once compiled a list of my top-50 for just Ontario.  Lookout was 13th on that list.  BBR was 49th.

Rank Course
1 St. George's
2 Devil's Paintbrush
3 Coppinwood
4 Hamilton
5 Rocky Crest
6 The National
7 Toronto
8 Essex
9 Beacon Hall
10 Westmount
11 Bigwin Island
12 Scarboro
13 Lookout Point
14 Osprey - Hoot
15 Oviinbyrd
16 Weston
17 Kawartha
18 Eagle's Nest
19 Mississaugua
20 Osprey - Heathlands
21 Muskoka Bay Club
22 Summit
23 Thornhill
24 Redtail
25 Glen Abbey
26 Rosedale
27 St Thomas
28 Heron Point
29 Devil's Pulpit
30 Brantford
31 Oakdale
32 Cherry Hill Club
33 Mad River
34 Cataraqui
35 Ridge at Manitou
36 Wyndance
37 Burlington
38 National Pines
39 Deer Ridge
40 Maple Downs
41 Taboo
42 Lambton
43 Tarandowah

No doubt, Mark - Lookout is indeed better than a number of those courses but I'd suggest top 30 is a stretch.  Inside the top 50 is very realistic though for Lookout, whereas Cherry Hill would be near the bottom of a top 100 list, maybe in the last 25 or so.  Again, my opinion only, which is basically worth less than the pennies our country has outlawed! ;)

Lookout makes my Canada top-30 for sure. Cherry Hill easy top 50.

As for the rest of it, I really don't know where to start. Certainly some strange outliers there.

I think that if you add Mark and Frank to your quartet of Qanucks, you'll emerge with a list that we in "Canada's Shorts" could really enjoy.

I've seen most of what there is to see and would be happy to chip in...although I suspect the process may get muddled with too many cooks in the kitchen.

It might be more interesting to see individual lists.

I sincerely doubt that there is 30 courses better than Blackhawk GC (Edmonton) in Canada...

and definitely not some of those 30 courses.

Just letting the treehouse know that Robert Thompson, Jeff Mingay, Mark Saltzman and I will be updating the Top 25 in Canada list done originally in 2005. Ben Cowan Dewar has found it nessasary to opt out because of the conflict of interest with his ownership of Cabot Links. The rest of us were comfortable with our conflicts since two of us (Jeff and I) clearly have a few. We missed Ben's input and opinions.

We have gone through the initial process and finalized a list. All four of us were comfortable with the results and no secondary discussion occured (we used the exact same system as last time - select the courses in order as you see them - we combine all the results and divided them by the number who have seen them).

We'll share the results with you as soon as the support writing is complete. Each has their list of courses to discuss.

We have assumed it will become an In My Opinion piece but that's completely up to Ran.

Forgive the side question gentlemen, but my travel to Manitoba is going to increase this year and was wondering if anyone could recommend a few courses of merit in the province?  Is there a thing as a top 5 list for each province?

Jason :

If venturing close to Winnipeg, it might be an idea to befriend a member of either the St Charles Country Club
(which has nines designed by Alister MacKenzie and Donald Ross) or Pine Ridge Golf Club
(where the course was remodelled by Donald Ross in 1921).

Jason,

Will your travels be confined to Winnipeg or somewhere else in the province?  In Winnipeg, the top 5 classic would be Elmhurst (Ross), Pine Ridge (Ross), St. Charles (Mackenzie & Ross), Niakwa (Thompson) and Glendale (Thompson).  Tom McBroom recently completed Southwood which opened in 2011 and would be worth a look.

Let me know when you will be in Winnipeg, I'de be more than happy to host you at Glendale and help to gain access at the other clubs.

Jason,

In regards to the Score List, I would avoid Granite Hills and Manitou (which I've never heard of, and don't think exists!).  Falcon Lake and Quarry Oaks are good, and Hecla and Clear Lake are certainly a notch below these.  Glaring omissions in my estimation are Minnewasta and Neepawa which are as good as anything outside of Winnipeg.  Grand Pines and Links at the Lake are also good options.
