Noel, I'm afraid I have to report that the PerryGolf buses were out in force last weekend at Machrihanish - I caddied for a group that took five-and-a-half hours to play 18 holes. Five-and-a-half hours! But of course, that's Scotland and not England - I don't really think you have too much to worry about so long as England remains a poor relation to Scotland and Ireland among American golfing tourists...

Cheers,
Darren

Darren:

You're an American--right? I think one of the things you should think seriously about is expatriation--permanently!

TEPaul,

Now that's confrontational.

Some could accuse you of trying to pick a fight.

And, you didn't even post anything about multiple tee markers.

I think there's a double standard here  ;D

"Some could accuse you of trying to pick a fight."

You're right Pat, some could. Not only could they--they will!

So what? I'll be honest, though, I'm not really trying to pick a fight--just to tell Darren Kilfara I think he's a smart guy but really wet behind the ears when it comes to some of the things about golf. Of course, I fully expect him to get all pissed off and accuse me of--whatever.

So what?

Forgive me for being dense, Tom, but what's your point? I don't "get it", as they say...

Excellent description of what golf in the UK is all about.  It's one of the reasons I have chosen to live here.

That being said, I'm sure you realise that those blessed with such a situation often do wonder what is on the other side of the road (pond) and can be seduced by fluffy fairways, anodyne "USGA spec (tm)" greens, cart girls, bunkers in the rough that provide eye-candy but no hazard, half-way houses, buffed-up college kids who unload their clubs from the car and call them "Sir", and a 19th hole with a wide-screen TV and Pina Coladas with nice little parasols and real ICE in them.  These guys probably wouldn't particularly like clubs like Cypress Point or Gulph Mills, either, but then again, they probably would have as much chance as a snowball in hell of getting games there.......

Darren

Don't worry about TEP.  I'm only 2-3 years younger than he is and he thinks I'm "wet behind the ears" too.

Rich:

No I don't--and I never said that about you. You're a contrarian of the highest order and a middle school existentialist of the worst kind.

Darren:

You don't "get it"? That's OK, no problem there. Calling me a Luddite is a term of endearment? OK, whatever you say.

Don't tell me, Howard's a member at a nice Fazio Course, right? I'm planning a trip to England and am salivating over the choice of places to play; each guaranteed to provide the proper dose of "mental renovation".

Mike Sweeney's read is a must.

I particularly liked how he advocates burying an 8 iron in anger.

I'm glad theres room for everyone, so this guy can stay close to home.

Let me get this straight...Americans don't get "it", yet only 10% of the people staying and playing at the holy of holies are Brits...who are the other 90%.? Spaniards? Hmmmm....I'll bet a goodly portion of them are Americans. Apparently, we do get it. Why is it that Americans are targeted for everything? Do Canadians get it?
