Gil Hanse Olympic course update
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:53:27 PM »
I just read in the new issue of Golfweek that the permitting process for Hanse' project in Brazil is still ongoing and that he is doing some other
design/renovation work while he waits however there was an interesting tidbit included.  Apparently Gil and his associates have spent extensive time in the Australian Sandbelt figuring out how to incorporate the maintenance and design techniques that'll allow them to use the
short grass around the faiway and greenside bunkers.  If this info. is redundant to the site I apologize but it was news to me.

Yes, by the looks of Mike Clayton's twitter feed and the Planet Golf newsletter, Gil Hanse has been having a good look around Melbourne.

Gil, Jim and one of their associates Neil were here for about a week in early jan.  It was great to show them around a group of courses we know and love so much.  All the usual suspects - RM, Kingston Heath, Victoria, Woodlands, Commonwealth, Yarra Yarra and Peninsula.  They had a blast!

Mike, did Gil and co have any surprising standout courses and/or other aspects from that lot or was it the standard RM, Kingston Heath, daylight, Victoria, daylight, then the rest?

Dominic,

I think it's fair to say Gil,Jim and Neil really liked the North Course at Peninsula. I don't think their views of the merits of the various courses differed from the conventional wisdom too much.

There's some reno work he could busy himself with at La Perouse until Rio sorts itself out...

I wanna say that there is also some thought going into how the course will play and more specifically be maintained after the Olympics have left town.  Is there a school of thought that this "Sandbelt" style of bunker and or green surround will be easier/cheaper to maintain over the longhaul.  It was my understanding that the Olympic course was going to be a "muni" of sorts after the games.

Any idea how the delay in Rio impacts the timing of Gil's work at Doral Blue?
