Has Commonground Recovered from Flooding?
« on: March 17, 2015, 11:59:39 AM »
I have a tight window in which I might be able to squeeze in a round tomorrow.  Commonground works well logistically and I have always wanted to see the place.  The weather looks ok tomorrow.

I recall there was some extensive damage due to flooding at one point.  Has it recovered?  Is it a worthwhile place to visit in its current state?

Jason:

The full 18 holes reopened late last summer.  I was there in the fall, and you'd never know it had been flooded.

Sold!  If any Denverites are up for playing at 1:00 tomorrow, shoot me a message.

The course is in great shape and a treat to play.

Jason, it would be great to get your input on CommonGround. What did you like (or not) etc.?

Doug:

It reminded me a bit of We Ko Pa Saguaro in that it seemed "Doak Light."   The greens were a bit softer in contour although they still had plenty of slope and I suspect would be very difficult if sped up.

The three holes that stood out to me as very good were:

The 8th - I loved all of the options off the tee and though there would be a number of different targets off the tee depending on the pin.

The 11th - After a good drive the best option probably was to bump it short of the cross bunker and pond but of course I hit a 3 wo/.;/lod in the water.  I like the look off the tee which makes it look more difficult than it is while still providing strategic options.

I also really liked the 13th (I think) - a driver/midiron par four to a tough green elevated with a front right bunker and a cool trench bunker in back.

The wind was pretty calm when I visited but I still thought there was plenty of interest tee to green.  With some wind, I suspect the course would improve.

I did not notice anything that I really disliked.  The 9th and 10th seemed a bit mundane but you need to get back to the clubhouse somehow.

I really appreciated the place after playing Glenmoor the next day.  I think if you created a list of all things vilified on this site, Glenmoor would have them all - containment mounding, housing, water in front of greens, artificial shaping, back and forth routing and slopes that I have no idea how they mow.  I did find it cool how they squeezed so many holes into such a small property.
