Does the Masters get higher TV ratings because...

CBS starts advertising during the NFL playoffs?

Just asking.

Jonathan,

Can't hurt, it's a mostly male audience and there's something appealing at looking at ANGC in April when it's freezing with snow on the ground in January.

The seed has definitely been planted.

The fact that it is the first golf that matters all year and for us here in the frozen north it is Spring's finest hour, at least until our home clubs are up and running and the weather warms.

Don't know and don't care... I hardly ever watch golf on TV anymore.  I can't stand the coverage.

It's the first major, after the psychic and meteorological thaw. It's always played on the same course. And we have so many ingrained memories of past feats on that course. Here's hoping that all will combine this year to help us forget the goof who won last year!

Chris,

It's the best telecast in all of sports.

Almost commercial free

And, the back nine on Sunday is usually packed with excitement.

If you're up north, where it's currently snowing, you can't wait until  April 11th

This is a great question and makes me wonder about the economics of the situation. Did CBS guarantee the MC a certain amount of call outs, per month, prior to the event? Are they running it as "fill" for time not sold at the $ they want?

Hi Pat. I love the Masters coverage due to the greatness of the course and the tournament but the required fawning, bowing and scraping of Nantz and the rest of the CBS crew makes me nauseous at times.

Advertising and prestige are two of the major reasons why networks pay so much for the rights to broadcast certain sporting events. The NFL playoffs, the NCAA tournament, and the Olympics are three of the biggest sporting events on TV (in the United States).

Do the networks make money on these events alone? Occassionally yes, but most likely no. They host these events on their networks to advertise for their own networks shows and coming events. Jim Nantz is probably more tired of reading 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'The Big Bang Theory' ads than we are hearing them.

Do the Masters get higher TV ratings because they advertise during the NFL playoffs? Probably not. What it is doing is wetting the appetites of major golf fans. I doubt an NFL fan who has never watched the Masters before is going to be influenced to watch the tournament because of an advertisement they saw in January.

Also, I believe the first weekend of the NCAA tournament is the best telecast in all of sports. For me it is like Christmas in March.

Mike,

I know, but sometimes you have to take the good with the bad, the bitter with the sweet.

And so it goes on April 11th

Sure Pat. Kind of like Bernadette on The Big Bang Theory. Totally worth it.

The Open is like the anti-Masters. I can't wait to see the Pros all bundled up and fighting cold temps and 20mph gusts when it's 90 in mid-July in CT.  ;D

It is hard to argue with that...

One thing to consider though, CBS probably does.

I would think the Masters commercials now are more about CBS reinforcing its brand with a great brand like the Masters.

I agree. I don't see why this has anything to do with The Masters wanting CBS to promote it. This is all CBS. They also runs promos for March madness during the NFL playoffs. Those three events are the crown jewels of CBS Sports for the year. They don't want you to forget it.
