Oakhurst and The Homestead - A Query
« on: January 21, 2013, 05:47:18 PM »
I've seen numerous references to the following fable:

"The first tee of the original Oakhurst course is still in use as the first tee of the Homestead Course."

Here's one citation:  http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_oldest_golf_course_in_the_US

Based on my rather limited understanding of cartography, I find it hard to believe that this could be the case.

Does anyone have any more information as to when this myth was first perpetuated?

This is quite the myth given their physical separation by a state line.

The first tee at the Homestead Old Course does have the distinction of being the oldest tee in continual use. They've done at least one re-design that made sure to leave that untouched.

My guess is that a mistake got made, published, and is now cited as being a fact - despite the obvious fact that its wrong.

It's probably not like the Homestead or the Greenbrier to police these wiki sites.

Jonathan:

I've seen the same citation in non-wiki sources, including this article on the history of golf west of the Mississippi:

Sven,

Again, I would suspect: bogus.

The Old Course was built before Flynn did the Cascades course, or RTJ did the Lower Cascades. While I don't have citations at the ready, I remember being back in school at Virginia Tech and reading about it having the oldest first tee in continual use. I think they brought this up in the '88 US Amateur.

But I've never seen anything other than these two sources that would indicate that they backed a truck up, uprooted the tee soil and all, and transported it the what, 45 miles to a new site to maintain its perpetual usage.

I'm just sayin'.....

I think we're on the same page as to the ridiculousness of the claim.  Never thought the tale had an iota of truth to it, it just struck me as odd that something so blatantly wrong could get repeated in a multitude of sources.
