New courses for 2013
« on: January 09, 2013, 05:21:21 AM »
This could well be one of the shortest threads in the history of GCA, but here goes:

What new courses are you looking forward to seeing in 2013?

For the sake of prompting a few more responses, let’s open this up to renovations/restorations/redevelopments as well.

For me, I can’t wait to see Streamsong which I know technically opened last year but a visit to the PGA show later this month will give me my first opportunity to see it. I also think gWest will cause a bit of a stir for those lucky enough to play it later this year.

Nice site and some great looking work Jonathan.  What can you tell us about golf in Slovakia?

David Kidd's Guacalito de la Isla course on the Pacific in Nicaragua opens next month. Kyle Phillips has a new course in Korea opening that looks pretty spectacular from pics.

It's kind of old news here already, but the new course at Dismal River will open this summer.  If there's a better course opening in 2013, I look forward to seeing it, too.

Jonathan,

Had never even considered Slovakia for a golf trip but your pictures leave me thinking. Certainly your pictures look more interesting than those on the Nicklaus Design site I found when searching on google.

Congratulations and the very best of luck.

Paul,
I would recommend Slovakia for a trip, maybe not a full golf trip as many courses are not up to scratch. Lots of castles to visit and the Tatras is worth visiting.

Mike,

Slovakia has a long history with golf, it has been played at Piestany ( a small spa town) for maybe 70/80 years. At the moment Slovakia has very few golf courses and the courses which do exist are not really anything to shout about which is a shame because some the land is wonderful.
I think the future could be good for Slovakia, some of the sites are truly unbelievable. The site at Penati is very similar to some of the heathlands around Surrey, pure sand, pines and heather ! Another site which is similar if it ever gets built is Kyle Phillips Sekule Dunes !!

The site was pure sand with areas of heather in places which we will transplant to some bunker faces in the spring. We have a fescue bent mix on fairways, pure bent greens and tall fescue for the roughs.
The site is around one hour from the centre of Bratislava or maybe 1.5 hours from Vienna.

Its a long drive away from Sand Valley and the roads from Slovakia through Poland are not the best.

I'm trying to think of a big golf project in the Philly area, including a restoration of a nearly 100 years old course, but I'm struggling to remember where this might be...

If I am not mistaken this is the finished product from your  "next big thing" thread a few years ago:

Congratulations, some of the pictures look very attractive!

Just trying to recognise landforms of the holes from the 2011 pics, but cannot link one to the other. Do you have any pictures of the holes that surround the sand dunes in your 2011 pics?

Jonathan, I get to Slovakia every couple of years but have not teed it up there as yet.  I may have to bring my clubs the next time.  I agree the Tatras are absolutely stunning.

Jonathan,

To the untrained eye your use of this land looks very sympathetic. If you have a new sand belt there in Slovakia I just hope others show the same deftness of touch.

Re: Dismal Doak, Ron Whitten admitted on twitter that it is "the" golf course opening in 2013.

Ron Whitten‏@RonWhittenGD

I think it will be Tom Doak's 2nd 18 at Dismal River in Nebr. @GolfCourseasArt Could Torrey Pines North be the architectural story of 2013?

I think it is safe for Tom to say that it is the top of the 2013 list.

Yes Niall, it is my design, I will post pics and a discription later this month. Too much under the gun with work now, but here is already a few teasers:

The third hole a 270 m driveable par 4.

The thirteenth hole a 360 m par 4 with a raised bunkerless plateau green

The seventeenth a 180 m par 3 with lots of short grass and a visually deceptive center bunker

Looks like great work Jonathan, love the scale of the holes and the feeling of being in pure sand.
Need to find time to come and see it this year!
